Developed by IBM in 1999, the Microdrive when released was the smallest hard drive in the world and contained 170 MB of storage space. The picture shows an example of a disassembled 4 GB Microdrive from an iPod Mini. Today, this drive is made by various manufacturers, but because the name is trademarked by Hitachi, it has different names, such as 1-inch hard drives. These drives range in size from 170 MB to 8 GB and, although still used today, they are being replaced by CompactFlash.
