Question

this computer is running a dual system on 2 partitions. XP and ME. i used a win 98 boot disk so that i could fdisk and format the drive to make it 1 drive. fdisk would only allow me to delete the c: drive. when i tried deleted the extended drive it says there are logical drives that need to be deleted. then i try to delete the logical drive and it says there are not any. so i cant delete the 2nd partition and i cant figure out why

Answer

What's likely happening is that Windows 98 detects a partition on the drive that it cannot read. Instead of using the Windows 98 fdisk program to delete the partitions run the Windows XP disk management. Additional information about configuring drives in Windows XP can be found on the below document.

If you're unable to boot into Windows XP to configure the drive boot the Windows XP CD and run the recovery console command diskpart to configure the partitions. Additional information about this command is found on the below link.

Finally, if you're doing all this because you need to create a Windows 98 partition simply delete the partitions using one of the above solutions and then recreate the partition using the Windows 98 bootable diskette.
