CHID: 6438

Question

Hi,

I have a program that is operating in Dos environment but i think it is encrypt and i cannot see what is inside the program.

Please kindly advise on how i should be able to view the program of such a LF.exe file. It is a independent file that can operate like a program.

Thank you

Answer

A .exe file is a compiled program file, therefore when you open it it will be gibberish or appear as if it is encrypted. You cannot view a .exe file as plain text, however you can use a hexeditor to get into portions of the file. However, when using a hexeditor you're not going to get plain text, instead you will only see values that can be changed and you must know what values you're looking to change. You may also want to review the below document which explains how to view a file as well as links you to our file assosicate page to get a better understanding of file types.
