information about f@h for a 4core cpu

i have upgraded and would like to install 4 single clients for the cpu's , is there an easy install download please , harry

edit , i read about smp and i don't think i would like it

The SMP client would get you a lot more production and it's easierr to set up than 4 single clients, it just has shorter deadlines.  Just as a rough comparison - on my 3GHz quad, SMP gets me close to 6000ppd, whereas 4 single clients got me around 500ppd.
The easiest way to run 4 single core clients would be to use the console client and make 4 folders - when I did this, I used the folders C:\fah\core1, core2, core3, core4.  Copy the F@H file into each of those folders and then run it within each, go through the setup and away you go.  You could set them up as services too which saves having four F@H windows open all the time.

thanks calum , i read that smp needs attention and maintenance were 4 singles work on their own , is that true

as i said i have 4 core's but also 4 GB ram , what would you say to do , the pc is only on about 4/5 hours a day

i notice with the 4 core that its folding a wu in 2 sessions but before i lost a lot of units because it was to slow

Actually, the SMP client nowadays is just as simple as a single client to set up and doesn't need any more maintenance.
However, if your PC is only on for a short time each day it probably wouldn't make the deadlines, so 4 single core clients would be the way to go.

Do you want to run F@H as a service, so it's invisible?
If so, download this file and make 4 folders.  Copy this file into each folder.  Go into the first folder, double click the file, and go through the steps of typing in your username and team number.  When it asks if you want to change advanced options, say yes.  Accept the defaults, but when it asks "Start as a service...." say yes.  When you're done with configuration and it begins to download the core, press Ctrl+C to stop it.  Repeat this for the the second, third and fourth folders you created, do exactly rhe same but change the "Machine ID" from the default of 1, to 2/3/4 respectively to avoid conflicts.
Once all four setups have been completed, go to start - run - type services.msc and press enter.  Find the four Folding@Home services, and start them all.
Four copies of F@H will now run in the background, with no visible indication that they're present.  If you want to keep an eye on them, I recommend HFM.NET.

If you'd rather not have them run as services, just accept the default "no" for "Start as a service..." and it will just run when you've done the configuration, however this will give you four command prompt windows for F@H.

thanks calum, i'm going run as a service so i have an icon(s) in the task bar i'll try it tomorrow night ( grandson wants on here ) and i'll let you know

hi calum , i did these below and clicked the first file and a black screen came up for f@h and the core was downloading and starting , no name or team , no matter what i tried before and after i could not get in to add team and name so i deleted everything to the bin .

OK, so you downloaded the file, made four folders, and put a copy of the file in each folder, right?
Then, you opened the program, and went through the configuration, right?
Started to download, and you hit Ctrl+C, good, it closed, good.
Now,

go to start - run - type services.msc and press enter.  Find the four Folding@Home services, and start them all.
Four copies of F@H will now run in the background, with no visible indication that they're present.  If you want to keep an eye on them, I recommend HFM.NET.

When you open the program, it should start configuration.  Could you post a screenshot so we can see what's happening?  I can't understand how it would begin downloading and working without any setup.

How about additional screenshots of when you run the client for the first time?
Your last screenshot looks like you haven't set the mchine IDs up correctly, every client needs a different ID.

ok , i'll start to-morrow and do it all freash and screen shot every move and post , them i will delete everything i have done first

but as i said i was never given the chance to set up the IDs no matter what i tried

ok i made 4 new files and download the f@h file, as seen below

only this time instead of saving i ran the file

then double clicked the file and it opened config , but if you read it i have filled it in wrong

i'm using 2,3,4,5 because f@h is using 1 at the minute

Looking at your config screenshot, that all looks fine however it looks like you're not logged on as an admin, so it's unable to create a service.  Run the program as an admin to take care of that, and use the same settings for every other option, and that should be fine.

Just right click on the setup file and choose "Run as Administrator".
