XP cannot access shared folders on Windows 7
    « on: August 25, 2010, 01:57:48 AM »
    Hi,

I have a home network consisting a Windows 7 desktop and a Windows XP laptop connected through a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. The Win 7 desktop replaced an old desktop computer with XP running. I named the new Win 7 desktop the same computer name as the old system.

I enabled files and printer sharing on both computers and specified which folders to be shared and etc.

My problem is, I can access/edit the folders/files from Windows 7 desktop to the Windows XP laptop but not the other way around. I cannot access the network printer from the laptop either.

On the XP laptop/My Network Places, I see Desktop\SharedDocs but whenever I click to open the folder I get a message that says, "Desktop\SharedDocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On the XP laptop/View workgroup computers, I see both desktop and laptop. When I click on desktop, I can see all the files that I enabled sharing but get the same message as above whenever I try to open any of those files.

Here's what I tried: on the desktop, I right-clicked on the folder I want to share, selected Properties/Sharing/Advanced Sharing... In Advanced sharing, I checked the "Share this folder" box then clicked on the "Add" button. A "New Share" popup shows up to enter the Share name and Description but I had no idea what to put in there. So I clicked cancel. Then I clicked on the Permissions button and clicked the "Add" button here but I couldn't find the laptop from "From this location" drop down box.

I'm really stuck here. I believe I tried everything I can think or find over the internet. I would greatly appreciate your help.

    Thanks in advance!

      Hi Spoiler,

Thanks for the link but I have already had all that done and the problem still existed.
