Hi,

I have a HP Laptop dv1326ap pre-installed with XP Home. Week back my father switched it off normally & after that Windows is not booting up.

On pressing the power button, the HP Logo comes up & then screen goes black. Tried starting windows to 'Last Known Good Configuration' by pressing F8, but no luck. Ironically, the restore disks have not been created. Have tested the RAM as one of the doubts but its okay.

Please assist.

Tap F8 as the computer is starting up. This will bring up the advanced startup screen. Choose last known good configuration from there.

Thanks JJ 3000 for your reply.

Apologies for the typing error in the first post, it was through advance startup by pressing F8 only. No Luck.

Still getting that black screen after selecting the OS.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

No new HW or SW. Can't say about the Virus & Error, as it was my father who had the laptop.

By him it was a normal shutdown.

Well, you can boot to your XP CD and do a repair install (choose the SECOND repair option). If it's not a virus or hardware problem that should work for you. Without more details it's hard to know for sure what to recommend.

Yeah, with this Laptop there was no XP Disk. You had to create a Recovery Disk for the same.  :(

Also, I strongly urge you (and all users) to begin using Disc Imaging software on a regular basis.

Well, one way or another it looks like you're going to need an XP (or newer OS) Disc.

Agreed, but how can we ascertain which SP was it on? Also, it is possible to get an image of a XP Home Edition disc?

Re: the image - we won't help with that.

As for the version, you may just have to purchase an XP CD (which will be SP3) and do an upgrade installation which is the same as a repair install.

If you know anyone with XP Home and SP2 CD borrow it...it will work for the Repair Install as long as you have a proper authorisation code. This is perfectly legal.

If by chance he had SP3 on there the Repair Install will halt and go no further. However there is a method of slipstreaming SP3 onto a new CD using the XPSP2 CD.

Slipstream Guide for SP3

Repair Install of XP

With both methods i suggest reading them thru and printing out a reference copy...

Got XP Home SP3 CD, should I boot with it & do upgrade install?

You should already have a code if the machine was legit...
It's either on a sticker on the machine or in your User Manual...

Okay, you meant the Product Key. Yup, I have it on the sticker on the back of the machine.

Repair Install of XP

With both methods i suggest reading them thru and printing out a reference copy...

The XP Repair Install procedure says "Do No Choose 'To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console'..."

Whereas, Allan here suggests to go by the second repair option...

Well, you can boot to your XP CD and do a repair install (choose the SECOND repair option).

What should be the right approach?

And your quote is correct...
Quote
Do No Choose 'To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console'..."

Read it thru a few times and print out a reference copy before starting...

Luckily enough after searching around have been able to trace out the Pack of CD's that came with the Laptop.

Tried using the OS CD (XP Home SP2) as per the method in
Repair Install of XP

Am able to move till Step 4 and getting stuck at Step 5, after accepting the License Agreement I am not getting the 'R' option.

That's because it's an OEM CD that will effectively wipe all your data and take the machine back to Day One status...

If this is not what you want you need to let us know before going any further...

Otherwise all bets are off...
