Google Plus is now available to the public by the looks of it.

To be honest, I think it looks almost the exact same as Facebook.

Still not available to Google Apps users.  Google customer service: fail.  (Many many apps users are paying customers...)

Really? That's a PITA alright, thought they'd release it to everyone together.

Anyway, I really don't see the point of it. It'll never become as big as Facebook at this stage.

True, but it will take a few users from Facebook. You know the sort. The ones that think every Facebook update is a personal attack on their Human Rights.  :P

facebook and google+ turn relationships, which are usually built on mutual trust through time, into a commodity which they then leverage for revenue. It's not inherently evil or bad, it just feel silly to be one of the cogs in their money-making machine.

I've been using Google+ on an off, I finally tried out the "Hangout" function a few weeks ago -- it was very neat.
Circles and "Hangouts" are definitely Google Plus' strong points.

Facebook recently introduced a feature to categorize your "friends" making it easy to hide things from work, family, and acquaintances or any group you want -- similar to circles. They are also working with Skype to introduce a video chat program, if that has not already been implemented.

Social networking is quite an interesting topic. It seems like an unreal phenomenon to have huge sites become so popular.
In July, Facebook reached 750 million 'active' users. An estimated 41.6% of the US population has a Facebook account.
That is truly amazing, a really scary.
First MySpace, than Facebook, what next?

I totally agree! If you want a bit of privacy I suggest Google+ ... few of my friends are there.

Chillerspot ... not at all. Google are worse than Facebook with Privacy. By default all info you add to your account is viewable by all, including most of your posts.

Well then don't post things you don't want everybody to see.

I can't believe I actually had to say that.

I don't really trust Google, which I suppose is a problem since I'm still using GMail and Google Search; and if I had a smart phone I'd probably use Android!

If there's anything you won't catch me and most people switching to, however, it's G+.  I know a few Facebook whores who use Facebook way too much and will probably jump at the opportunity to set up another parallel account on G+ to waste more time making friends with complete strangers but that's probably the only real switching they'll get in any magnitude.

Google had a tendency to provide software that either didn't exist before, or filled a niche by being free or better in some way.  I don't see this with G+, not really sure what they were thinking, it's more of a 'nice idea' than a business plan and will likely prove quite an embarrassing mistake for the board.
