What is the make and model of your laptop?
Is your RAM DDR/DDR2/DDR3?
What are your RAM timings and frequency?(you can find these out with this program: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html)

What OS are you using on the Laptop?  If not 64-bit, 4 to 6GB will do nothing since it won't be recognized.

FTFY.

What are you doing on this computer. A RAM upgrade might not be the best bet.
This could be opening a new can of worms completely though.

If A) the laptop can take more RAM and B) their OS can utilize the additional RAM there is no "can of worms" being opened...

Ya but if the video card cant keep up or the CPU is 10 years old then the additional RAM wouldn't be much of a help, no?

A ten year old system isn't going to have 4GB of memory, and the Graphics Card has nothing to do with Memory. (I assume the Graphics cards used in many servers would have problems "keeping up" (with what? the RAM?) since they don't even have one, or they just have some sort of PCI card for basic desktop graphics.

Another note: A lot of laptops actually come maxed out. My laptop has and came with 4GB and that is it's maximum capacity, for example.

Ya this is true. Guess we have to see what the computer is, before we can see if a RAM update is possible
Thanks for the info BC.

according to his profile he is using xp, even if he is using a 64bit os the chances of him actually using 4gb of memory he has installed is unlikely.

Why not just go to http://www.crucial.com/ and do a scan to see what the best options are. No obligation to buy from them either
