I am in the process of building an all-in-one search application, so I'm collecting usage data on popular web search engines.

http://duckduckgo.com has been getting a lot of favorable mentions lately.

Enable WOT in Duck Duck Go by clicking Settings then scroll down to Site icons: and use the drop down to select All WOT + Favicons (both).

The same search engine is also https://startpage.com and https://startingpage.com. All enhanced by WOT. A huge plus IMHO.

This one is pretty cool. "Cloud" search engine. http://yippy.com

Family safe searches. I hit a certain search term and was told that they do not support that kind of search on it's cloud.

With YIPPY, you not only receive private, protected web browsing and search capabilities, you get

- A Family-Friendly platform protecting you and your children from pornography and more unseemly elements of the web
- Web-based Email, Documents, Storage, Calendars, Contacts, Tasks, and More!
- 2Gb Storage on the YIPPY Cloud
- Video Conferencing and Chat
- Fully customizable user platform including themes, backgrounds, icon sets, views, and more
- Television, Cartoons, and Movies
- Hundreds of News Feeds on all your favorite topics
- Dozens of Video Games
- Streaming Radio in many genres
- Widgets for Local Events, Weather, and much more

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And another. This one is for the green crowd. http://gigablast.com

The Green Search Engine
Serving close to ten million queries per day, mostly through other websites, Gigablast is
the leading clean-energy search engine. 90% of its power usage comes from wind energy.

Never heard of it before, but if I had kids at home I would make it the only search engine they could access.

I was disappointed that Yippy is no longer taking on new accounts. The desktop version looked pretty interesting but you can't sign up to use it.

The OP's premise of building a search engine is a bit ambitious...

I want to thank you all for your replies.
Patio, I feel I should correct you - I'm not building a search engine, but rather an all-in-one search center to launch a keyword search on the web. And even if I were building a search engine, ambition is what programmers use to find their limits!

Thank you all again.
