I fell prey to clicking a bad link in an email this morning.  All heck broke loose in my computer.  I tried running virus scan but it wouldn't let me.  I shut down and started up in safe mode and ran virus scan and removal there.  Restart computer and it is working, but everything is gone!  EVERYTHING!  Nothing was on the start menu, so I fixed the defaults.  But there are no programs listed.  I went to my computer...no programs on the c: drive...nada...zilch.  No pictures, music, or word docs.  I opened RUN....C:...DIR....nothing.  Yet the computer is working.  I think I successfully removed the virus (or whatever it was) but not before some serious damage happened.  I never created a save point and I don't have a back up.  Is there anything I can do from home.  I have an appointment with a computer tech in the morning, but if I think I understand enough to follow a walk through if anyone out there wants to save me a hundred bucks.  Please help.

After poking around I found that all the programs that aren't showing on my program list or on the desktop come up when I populate the add/remove program list.  I also ran both chkdsk and chkdsk/f from the command promt.  I have tried everything I know how to do and can get answers for.  I would much rather skip this appointment tomorrow, if anyone can help.  :/

If I have hope to get help to fix it, I would cancel/postpone appointment to try on my own.  Is it possible it can be fixed or should I take it to the expert?  Thanks for posting.

Does this mean, it can be done, but debatable if I can do it?  Or does this mean I need to just fork out the cash because it will probably be less painful..HA!

Before tomorrow morning...i would say absolutely not...

Can it be done ? ? I would say yes...the Experts over there are some of the best.

However i feel as you are backing me into a corner for an answer to a query i can only advise on...not give an absolute yes..or no...

Especially considering the narrow parameters you put forth on short notice...

Best of Luck...bring us good news...

I have to apologize...I didn't see the link you posted, before I wrote MY last two posts.  In any case, I am following the instructions on the link and do not expect miracles.  I am thinking I will postpone my appointment and try this forum and whatever days it takes to get some kind of answer.  I feel capable and I much prefer to try to fix things myself if I have proper guidance.  If I came off wrong, I apologize for that too..was my failed attempt at humor.  In any case, I appreciate you taking your time to help.  Free is nice.  Thanks.

Thanks so much patio!  I'm not sure I'm done yet, but I have my programs and files back after following yours and SuperDaves instructions!  So AWESOME!  I feel bad for all the people out there that don't know this site exists or are intimidated by attempting to repair their own stuff.

Of course it matters. We welcome the fairer sex on the forums and would want them to feel at home here.truenorth
P.S. My wife (of 50 plus years) has pointed out that today`s modern day woman might find my remark above sexist. Please remove any such notion that such be the case it may just be a generational thing. The long and the short of it is welcome to the CH forums.

truenorth..  My life experiences have taught me to not get offended easily.  It wouldn't have even been a consideration from what you said, but I appreciate where your wife was coming from.  I wasn't offended being called "him" either...just clarifying.  I figured I should set it straight now.  I have decided I LOVE this site and will forever use it and hopefully be able to answer some small question for someone else, so I can pay it forward.   ;)

patio..  My (actually my sons) computer still has issues.  But when it is fixed, I will most likely come back to this post and add the Win Patrol and Stinger.  I'm following instructions to the T for now.  That said I have a new computer on the way.  It arrives Friday and I can tell you the first thing I am doing is loading it up with security.  If I can help it, this will NEVER happen to me again.  HA! :P

Gotta get to work.  Have a good day guys!

One more question before I go.  Right now I am using the free versions of the suggested securities.  Is there anything I should upgrade to the paid version of???

I believe all the ones that patio suggested will serve the purpose for which they are intended with the free version. Generally the loss with a free version of software is the absence or diminished technical support. Sometimes there are also program limitations on the free version versus the paid version such as less scanning (but this can often be overcome by repeating the process). Generally speaking when free versions are available i would recommend using that version. You can always go to the paid version (if it exists) after you have used the program and for whatever reason you feel it would be an advantage to go to the paid version. Just as an example from personal preference. I own (paid for ) a multitude of media burning software. However i am using pretty well exclusively "sothink movie dvd maker" free version. The compromise is it shows a brief promotional window at the start of the playing of the video which would be eliminated in the paid version. But the primary reason for using it is that to date i have found that it is the only one (that i know of)  that can compress (automatically) up to 5 hours (it may be even more) of video in just about any format and record it to a 4.7 gb dvd disc. truenorth

More accurately, I get prompted to upgrade if I am poking around in the program, which is NOT a big deal at all...and so far this has just been on AVG.

On this subject, I am getting a new computer today with Win7 as OS.  Is the same security set up ok for Win 7 as well?  I'm so excited!  I am about to start playing online games which I have never done on any platform (have too many other toys like wii, xbox, ds..etc.).

Going to mosey over to the Win7 forum to ask questions about me new PC. ;D

Just that quick, I changed my mind.  Going to wait until I get the computer in my hands, since I will most likely have more questions... or at least different ones.  Just excited.

You should enjoy win 7 (i do). No substitute for just getting in the water and thrashing about. One nice feature i like on 7 is the very easy method of viewing options (access to monitor or tv screen or both) when connecting to a HD tv. May not be a relevant if your "new" computer is a desktop. Be prepared for a bit more touchy feely stuff such as "do you really want to do---" in 7. But it can make you feel more needed  ;D Enjoy, truenorth

Further inspection...

Still don't have icons to my programs, and many things read empty when I try to open them from the programs menu like...

Some of the accessories
All of the admin tools
My printer
HP back up and recovery
InterVideo WinDVD
Itunes
Light scribe
MS Office tools
MS Silverlight
Picasa
Quicktime
Soundmax
Startup

However, I can find pictures from programs that aren't showing, music from itunes which isn't showing etc.

What am I missing?
