Is this really free - Minecraft?

Friend of mine asked me if this was really free. Last I knew the game still cost money. But this site claims its a free version?

The download downloads the Minecraft Launcher. (and probably other things too).

It is useless without a Minecraft account login.

    Sorry to take over the topic but, Yeah, I figured that... :-[

    It turns out that I'm trying to bring my brother (13 y.o.) to linux but can't make minecraft run in wine  :-[

    I've tried Minetest for him, but not the same.

    Does any of the GURUs around recommend anything??

    Just download the Linux version from the official Mincraft site: https://minecraft.net/download - It's just a .jar file so you will just need to run that.

        OK, so I couldn't wait till tomorrow  :P :P :P

        I've just downloaded it and run It the first time as:
        java -jar Minecraft.jar

        Unbelievable!! As simple as Linux  :o
