    my inbox has a message about Mb's. emergency update concerning a threat, & they suggest new installs for protection. Is this real, or a scam ? do the suggested updates cost anything ?

    Sounds like a scam. Rule of thumb is if any E-mail gives you a link and tries to get you to go to it, it is a scam.
