December 2015, not going to be available now!  In fact, these all sold out within hours when they were launched.  :P

First of all, that's a Raspberry Pi Zero, not a Raspberry Pi.  Due to the low price of $5, they are very hard to come by as they sell out of stock very quickly.  If you really want one and are willing to pay extra for it, you can buy them on Ebay.  The Zero is a stripped down version of the full blown Pi but is still useful for lots of projects.

Independents are still selling them on-line in the US$20 range, still one-per-customer at Adafruit at US$5 each, some reports of multiple purchases at US$5 each walk-in only at MicroCenter. Pimoroni have them at UKP £4 each, one per customer. There is an online stock checker at http://www.whereismypizero.com/ that monitors Pimoroni, The PiHut and Adafruit. I see Canakit has one per customer at CAN $5.

You can try out the latest Pixel desktop on Raspbian on an x86 PC or Mac using the Pi Foundation's bootable pen drive or live CD image. You can make the pen drive have persistent storage and treat the machine as if it was a Pi. I have been playing around for a month now.

Downloads:

1.3 GB ISO:

https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/pixel_x86/images/pixel_x86-2016-12-13/2016-12-13-pixel-x86-jessie.iso

SHA1 hash file to make sure you have a genuine image:

https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/pixel_x86/images/pixel_x86-2016-12-13/2016-12-13-pixel-x86-jessie.iso.sha1

Apparently it is very popular and the site is getting hammered, making downloads a bit slow, (like 1 hour on my 200 Mbit connection) so helpfully they also supply the torrent file (3 minutes!):

https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/pixel_x86/images/pixel_x86-2016-12-13/2016-12-13-pixel-x86-jessie.iso.torrent

If you felt nervous about a Torrented download, check the file hash with something like Windows built-in Certutil (command line) or a free GUI checker like Hashtab, and compare it with the one in the sha1 file.

Finally you can truthfully say you use Torrent for downloading Linux distros!

Personally, if I was going to buy my first Pi hardware I would sooner go for a Pi 3 Model B, $40 from Amazon. Easier to connect to and it's got wi-fi.

Can you do anythingwith a Rasberry Pi Zero?
Not much utill you add some more parts.

What do you get with the Rasberry Pi Zero?
  •  1Ghz, Single-core CPU.
  •  512MB RAM.
  •  Mini HDMI and USB On-The-Go ports.
  •  Micro USB power.
  •  HAT-compatible 40-pin header.
  •  Composite video and reset headers.

For Raspberry Pi Zero projects see Hackster.io

Pis aren't great as general purpose computers, they aren't powerful enough for that and while they may work (especially with the new, full power Raspberry Pis) they will be pretty sluggish.  Besides, if you want a general purpose PC, you could use the money that you would spend on a new Pi and get a much more powerful, used, PC.

The great thing about these devices is to be low cost devices for building projects around.  They are cheap, low power (can run on battery if required.etc) and have decent built in I/O (such as the GPIO headers) which are great for connecting to custom hardware.

The original design goal for the Pi was to get the price down low enough for schools to be able to afford them so that every school kid could have one to learn on.

I personally have 3 Pi 3s, 1 Pi 2 and 2 Pi Zeroes.  They're fun to play around with.
