Because beige is beautiful !!!

« on: June 08, 2006, 07:48:25 PM »

How about a trial of scheduled appearances in the ComputerHope chat areas? dl65 and I were discussing this. Of course everyone will have a different "best time" depending on their schedule and continent, but there would be some regularly posted times when at least one designated person would be on (barring unforseen circumstances).

I will volunteer for Saturday a.m. at 10:00-12:00 a.m.  CST (U.S.)

Anyone else who is interested just pick a time and post it here, or just show up to one of the scheduled times. I have no agenda (although certainly interested parties could post one for "their" time. All topics are open, and everyone is welcome. We can just type away or work on specific issues.

The format will evolve as we go. If it doesn't succeed, it will be no more of a ghost town than it is now.  ;)

Please post as much information about your computer, operating system, and problem as possible, what happened prior to problems, etc. Too much info is OK, too little is pointless! Don't just say "My computer doesn't work. What's wrong?"

That's what I said. Look on the homepage for CH, right above the "computer hope forums" hyperlink. I'm told that's been there for ages...

I used to hang out in the chat room on weekday evenings late last year, but since I seemed to be the only "techie" person who could find his pulse I would quickly get swamped with noobs. Example:

WebUser253: HLP!!1 My cmptr isnt wrking right!!!1
Me: Ummm... Could you be a bit more specific? What OS are you running?
WebUse253: idk, whts a OS??ROFLOFLBBQ!!!shift+1!!1
***WebUser345 enters #computerhope
WebUser345: HLP PLZ!! MY copmuter cant print I need to print why cant I print help!!!
Me: Okay, hang on for a just sec while I take care of this other person first, okay?
WebUser345: k
***WebUser437 enters #computerhope
WebUser437: MY computers slow. o, do u have any codez??
WebUser253: helOOO!!11
Me: I'll be right with you 253
Me: WebUser437, no cracks in here. Have you run Spyboat/Ad-Aware
WebUser345: HEELLPP!!!!
***WebUser105 enters #computerhope
WebUser105: I dropped my laptop out my cars window on the highway, can you help me???
Me: AAAHHHHH!!!!

Seriously. I'd spend hours just trying to figure out if the person's keyboard was USB or Serial. Add the fact that a new WebUser would saunter in every 45 minutes or so with the same: "U need to hlp meee! My scrn iz alll blu and says STOP at teh top!!1" plea and I started to wonder if I shouldn't change my job searches from I.T. to something easier like rodeo clown or enlist in the Marines. One lady even asked for help with her grandkids old 16 bit NES (I actually kinda solved her problem though!). My suggestion: Use DCC chat to keep the confusion to a minimum and use Remote Assistance if at all possible! ;) Keep a paper bag close by in case you need to breathe into it. Oh, and log your chats. You might look back years from now and laugh. Or you might not. :)

Seriously, if enough helpers were present, it could work out pretty nice. Its funny and a bit ironic that more noobs know about and find their way onto the channel than techs.

My ground rule is that you must log in with a unique name, preferably the one you use on the forums.

So if someone comes in chat and says "what you said before didn't work", I wanna be able to know exactly what it was that didn't work,  without the tiresomeness of asking. :)

As for your solution... LOL why didn't I think of that?

I am about to yell at "Webuser" right now.

Dilbert,
The chats do not go through the CH server. In fact, I belive that they are on a serparate server.

Therefor, it may be hard to log chats. Unless you would like to keep a computer running for a LONG time and just have is sit there.

We could make a post somewhere that we could post our chats at if we helped someone.

(You could also ask the Admin to put a Bravenet counter on a page. This will let people view the buisiest times and days. But the only problem I can see if the fact that it is Bravenet.)
Oh, and Dilbert what program are you using to access the CH Chatroom?

Does Computer Hope provide any stats or other special features for chat?

Logs have been generated from the initial day opening of the Computer Hope channel on March 1, 2003. These logs will help us with controlling the channels, keep stats, and help with other agents that will be available as soon as possible.

Now all we have to do is find these "logs"....

Does anyone have one of those programs that lets you view an Internet Websites website directory? If so, see if you can find the logs. (that is if they are stored on the CH server)

***--------------------------------------------------------------------***
EDIT: I'm sorry, I just had to post this:
User info for Webuser
*** Webuser [JavaWebUse@ool-44c40d6a.dyn.optonline.net]: Java Web User

*** channels: @#computerhope

*** server: koolaid.ny.us.blitzed.org [Goin' surfing cause I don't like your face!]
*** End of /WHOIS list.

Don't use the Java Chat. Use the colorful icon for chat. Does that help?

If no one is there it will look rather empty!

Elixir,
Chances are, your one of those people who are having trouble getting into the chat without the Java chat.

On the chat page, under Join Chat, type your nick name, and then simply press ENTER to not go to Java Chat

An update on the whole "summer job" deal:

I am not going to get a job this summer. Instead. I will spend Summer Vacation with my grandmother, and I will be a part of the Swim Team. (The only sport I'm any good at; I'm not as weak as my classmates like to think) This means more time will be there. However, my grandmother is on a fixed income and my chances of being in chat all day are small. So, I may drop out of the Internet entirely, appearing erratically on occasions. This is done to save her electric bill (comp being off and all). :)

BTW, someone donated a computer to her. It in some ways rivals my own. I have to admit, I'm a tad jealous of her 7 USB ports, Two CD-burners (one is also a DVD-writer, like mine), some LCD monitor with the newer connection I don't understand...

That's the good news. The bad news.... it was equipped with McAfee. And my parents wouldn't let me install decent protection first... by the time I got on and installed SpyBot, it found and removed no less than 35 infections! Geez!

If I recall correctly, it's a comical reference to a discussion months ago about a relative of yours who had an infected PC.

Of course it could also possibly be the case that Fed wants to wind you up.  ;)
