Two beeps when starting my computer
« on: September 18, 2006, 05:52:51 AM »
I've recentely read the meaning of beeping codes whenever the computer starts up.
Since yesterday, every time I turn my computer on I get two short beeps, I'd appreciate suggetions or instructions on how to recognize and solve this problem.

My motherboard specs:

CPU Type -      Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz (18 x 133)
Motherboard Name -      Compaq Evo D310
Motherboard Chipset -      Intel Brookdale-G i845G
System Memory -       512 MB  (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type -      Compaq (10/30/02)
Communication Port -      Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port -    ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

If anybody has a lead but needs specs of different areas, do ask me to post them.

    Did you read this:

    http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

You may want to check out the specific beep codes for your  model on the Compaq web site.
Please post as much information about your computer, operating system, and problem as possible, what happened prior to problems, etc. Too much info is OK, too little is pointless! Don't just say "My computer doesn't work. What's wrong?"

I'm not sure which one I have, I think it's this:
    2 short        Parity circuit failure

I've opened my PC and cleaned it, as well as I tried doing system restore to two days ago.
Also when this problem begun, I have also been experiencing a massive frames per second drop in games (Still am).

Did you have the problem BEFORE you opened it up to clean it?

      Try reseating the RAM.

The problem occured before I've opened the PC, infact, my purpose was to see if all the hardware is set in place and not loose, as well as clean.

I must say the problem started parallely to the massive FPS drop, after my game (Guild Wars) went almost impossible to play, I've restarted my computer and the two beeps occured, I see them both connected, I suppose.

      • All hardware is properly seated?
      • All heatsinks are fastened?
      • All heatsinks have a good amount of thermal paste applied to them?

You should test the memory using the following software; Microsoft Crash Analysis (Click)

Almost all my games are super slow, computer beeping didn't stop, probably have to do with drivers.
I guess it's over, my motherboard and graphic card's time to be replaced, they lived longer than expected.

I might even get a new fan, my pc's avarage heat is 70-100 degrees celsius..

I appreciate the attempted help, if any of you have any suggestions based on experienced about motherboards or graphic cards which can last for a while but aren't very priced, they will be welcomed.

Pardon for double-posting, I was told to remove my RAM and put it back.. But I'm not quite sure which one it is and how to do it, I'll see if it works.

Make sure to take the proper static precautions whenever working inside the case...

With proper maintenance hardware can last for well over 15 years. Life-span, that is. Not performance-wise.

70-100 degrees celcius is very hot, all you may have to do is clean the entire computer (Remove the dust with pressurized air) and replace the thermal paste underneath the Northbridge and CPU heatsink and perhaps even the videocard heatsink and it should operate at reasonable temperatures again.

Drivers need to be regularly updated and if they are corrupted, you would notice immediatly.

You should inspect the mainboard to see if any of the condensators are leaking a yellow fluid, if so, the mainboard needs to be replaced.

I've cleaned dust off the computer, I should've switched a fan when I've had the chance, this computer has been hot for quite a time now, no yellow liquid was leaking out when I've inspected the hardware, sadly I'm not extremely educated in that term, so it takes me slightly longer to recognize the motherboard, the graphic card and the RAM, as well as harder.

I will wait until both my friend and father return from abroad and try to see what to do, as well as next week I might be able to get more face to face help.

I'm still in mystery about the beeping though, I doubt the heat alone would cause such distruption in the devices and lead to horrible performence, I haven't mobilized my PC before it happened quite a lot, unless moving it back and forth to connect earphones to the back counts as mobilizing, one person told me, that when she had very slow performence she took out her RAM, put it back in and everything was alright again, but I'm too worried I might cause damage so I will have to wait for people with more experience to come and assist me, many thanks for your comments anyhow, they have helped me see the elaborated image of scenarios which might reflect the situation, I will take notice of anything said here and definetly use it while consulting.
      Cheers all.

Good Luck and let us know if you need further advice...

There's nothing wrong with letting someone with more experience work out of your problem.

I most likely will stick around, it seems like a great place to know from more experienced people than I, and I will keep you updated with progress.

Another thing, from doubt, it became clear that it is not software related, due to the fact even my videos are having problems playing. (My friend though it was drivers.)

      Update:
I've taken the RAM out, cleaned it carefuly and re-seat it in its place, yet the beeps are still there, so either the RAM isn't the problem, (521 RAM I believe), or it's the RAM and it's damaged.

      Drivers are software.

Perhaps your videocard is faulty, have you tried reseating it or testing it in another computer?

And what exactly do you mean by "My videos are having problems playing"?
