wanted to use ms paint.  wrong.  i received these error messages:
1 - mspaint.exe failed to respond.
2 - ms paint.exe.mdmp failed to respond.
3 - appcompat.txt failed to respond.

i tried three times, but got same messages.

i went to control panel>add/remove programs to delete it and re-download, but ms paint is not in control panel.

used search>files and folders>ms paint and the search came up with ONLY one file=mspaint.exe   which will not respond.

what to do?
thank you.

Well, one solution is just to forget about Paint and download an alternative such as Paint.Net.  It also has more features than MS Paint.

1.  Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.

2.  Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

3.  Right-click the registry key, and then click Delete.

This registry key is rebuilt the next time that you start Paint.

clicking HKEY_CURRENT_USER gave me these options:

collapse
new
find
export
permissions
copy key name

delete is not highlighted - no option

In HKEY_CURRENT_USER you need to find the folder called software. Double click it and find Microsoft and so on until you get here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

Then when you find Paint, right click it and select Delete.

Have you tried running paint after you did this?

i went to control panel>add/remove programs to delete it and re-download, but ms paint is not in control panel.

You have to go deeper in the Add or Remove Programs panel to find Paint.  With Add or Remove Programs open, click on Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side of the panel.  When the Windows Components Wizard appears, select Accessories and Utilities (should be first item by default) and click on Details.  With Accessories selected, click on Details again.  Paint should appear in the list for Subcomponents of Accessories.  Select it and click OK and OK.

ikitty thanks soybean.  it worked!
now, how does ikitty call it up?

ikitty's reason for the initial question was that ikitty wants to make screen shots from the internet using the "print screen" key.  the clipboard is in windows office12 and ikitty does not understand how a picture/text can cross from the internet to windows office12.
ikitty attempted click/drag>copy, then opening area clicking edit>paste.  did not work.  ikitty tried right clicking>copy opening area right clicking>paste.  didn't work.   then ikitty read about right clicking>copy, open paint>paste, but ikitty could not find paint.
so, please, how does ikitty use "print screen" to paint?

ikitty is not as ignorant as ikitty appears today.
gracious thanks.
