When I insert some web addresses as - http://www.etc - then click to find, the web address sometimes appears as http://www1etc
Where does this 1 come from? why is it there? is there a problem?

What web browser are you using? How about your operating system and memory and other hardware specs?
Check for updates for your software as well as spyware and viruses. Of course, without more information, all we can do is do a whole lot of bad guessing.

Some sites uses this because they have multiple servers (in order to handle high loads). So the site could have servers on sub domains called www1, www2, www3, etc and then it balances server load by redirecting visitors to one of these sub domains.
One example that utilizes this method is http://cd-wow.com.

So unless you're experiencing a problem I would say this was quite normal.

Deerpark,
Thanks for that information, its put my mind at rest. I wasn't sure if someone was hijacking and redirecting my input. Now at least I feel a little safer.

Michaewlewis,
I've got a relatively new computer - Advent T9408. IntelCore 2CPU, 1022MB, 1.8gH, 320GB,  with Windows vista, using the latest versions of explorer etc., have automatic updates enabled and scan every day for anything untoward, I'm also using Norton 360 which I find easy (but uninformative) - A bit like vista defragmenting!

                                                                                           Thanks again
