Hey guys...

I am going through quite the crisis at the moment and am in serious need of help.

I'm on a friends laptop right now because my desktop seems to have a virus, spyware, a trojan... *censored* I don't know, I'm far from computer savvy... I just know that something really bad is going on. Anyways here's what I've been seeing...

I first noticed something unusual going on when I would continuously hear the "click click" sound (you hear when clicking links and what not) every few minutes, even though I hadn't clicked on anything. At first I thought it was just popups trying to come up that were being blocked, but my comp wasn't mentioning them or anything so I was sorta confused. I just shrugged it off as something normal that I was too stupid to comprehend though.

Then later on in the night I decided uninstall my Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer just for the heck of it, I never use it anyways. And got an alert with a big red X on it saying "This window is busy. Closing this window may cause some problems. Do you want to close it anyway?" it then gave me the options of "OK" or "Cancel". I've also gotten this message when trying to use Windows Update... Both times I tried both options and nothing happened.

Whenever I tried going to Internet Explorer I got an error message "Internet Explorer has incountered a problems and needs to close..." yadayada. It seems like I was getting the "This window is busy" message for that too for a while also, but it quit with that (for internet explorer atleast). It's also quit giving me an error message when I click internet explorer, now it just doesn't open and that's it.

Yahoo Messenger wont work either, it'll come on but once I log onto the internet it brings up an error message saying that it needs to shut down before I can ever log onto my name.

My Ares program has been all that will work online it seems. It will log online and let me search and download songs and files. But I tried playing a song on it earlier this morning and saw a message at the bottom (where it normally shows the name of the song I'm playing and how long it's been on) that says "Media Error: Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding.".

Yesterday when everything had just started happening I ran SpyBot Search and Destroy a few times but it never found anything... I eventually just deleted it. I then installed McAfee Security Center, which also came up clean after I scanned everything. And earlier today I downloaded something called SpywareBot(I believe that was what it's called) from this computer to a disk, I then put the disk into my desktop and attempted to install. But when the "Prepairing to install" thing came up another box with a red X on it popped up saying "Unexpected Termination" so I press OK on that and another box pops up with a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it and the heading "Windows Installer" that says The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

Hmm... Oh yeah, another strange thing is that after having the computer on for a bit and clicking here and there the task bar changes from the normal XP color, blue, to a kind of tan... sort of like the old windows 95 use to be.

*sigh* I dunno what's going on but it sure is driving me up the wall... Does anyone know a way to solve this problem or atleast what's causing it?

Btw I must warn you once more ahead of time that I am technologically retarded... so go easy on me if I have trouble following any particular directions or advice.

Thanks.

Ah, I sure don't anymore apparently. I looked for the disks that came with the comp all night last night but came up with nothing...

What kind of security do you have on your screwed computer? Firewall, antivirus, antispyware?
Can you still connect to the Internet?

lol As of right now all that I have is McAfee Security Center (a disk which I rouged from this computer) but it doesn't seem to help at all.

:::::::::: Update::::::
And yes, it still connects online. But I seem to be disabled from doing anything online anymore aside from downloading from ares.

I downloaded something called SpywareBot

This is a rouge program and will only increase your problems.

This sounds like either your disk is on the way out, or your memory is faulty.

Have you done any maintenance? Disk defrag, disk cleanup.

Go to Start > Run type CHKDSK and click OK.

Ah, well it's good the spywarebot didn't work I suppose...

And yeah, I did a disk defrag this morning.

What does "Go to Start > Run type CHKDSK and click OK." do?

Ares is used to download music, software, video, ect. It's like Limewire or Napster...

So, you can't perform any regular Internet browsing?

Nah, whenever I click on Internet Explorer nothing happens. It only shows the hourglass for about a second or two and then a box pops up saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"...

Checks the disk for errors and corrects them if possible.

Also, which Ares do you use, there are more than one.

If you want to perform CHKDSK, you should run:
chkdsk /f
but, you're having so many issues, that to me, you're due for Windows reinstall

chkdsk /f will require (most likely) the install disk which is why I suggested CHKDSK.

When I tried to run chkdsk /f it came up with a message which read...

"The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

Should I type Y and reboot? Or will it still not work?

If you check yes it will run before windows loads so nothing can block it from running.
