problems with computer

I just got a refurbished computer with Windows Vista with 226 gb of memory, and the hard drive seems to be just disappearing. Every time I check the amount of GB left it has less. Last time I checked, I had 185. I've only downloaded a 9 mb torrent and performed a virus scan since then and suddenly I only have 182 left. Can someone help me with this?

What antivirus scanner are you using? Is it updated?

I understand that your hard drive space used to be 266GB, and that now it is 185GB. I dont think the entire loss can be blamed on the following reasons, but, nevertheless:

Internet storage space, your temporary internet files need to be cleared
Page file has allocated fully from the time you purchased the computer
Torrent cache
Other programs

Try downloading CCleaner, installing, and running it. Please read this configuration and run guide:

I did the clean and it only deleted 88 mb worth of files. Any other ideas? I'm using Norton Antivirus.

Are you just using an anti-virus or a virus suite?  there is a substantial difference in the amount of space each occupies.

the problem is everytime i turn my computer on, more memory is gone (now its at 179)

and i've only got 4.62 gb saved on the computer, so where's all this memory going?

You are losing storage space not memory so an infection is the first suspect.
However the more we know about the machine the better the assistance will be...

SUPERAntiSpyware should be run in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; pick Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
    * Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
          o Close browsers before scanning.
          o Scan for tracking cookies.
          o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    * Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    * Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.

    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
          o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
          o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
          o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
          o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
    * Click Close to exit the program.

The HouseCall log showed one detected grayware/spyware. I used clean and got rid of it no problem.

Click Start --> All Programs --> Accessories, then right-click Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator.  Once you make it to the prompt, type in "chkdsk c: /r" (without the quotes) and hit enter.  It will say it cannot run because the volume is in use by another process, and asks if you'd like to run it next time the system restarts.  Type Y and hit enter, then reboot your machine.  When it restarts, chkdsk should start running.  Pay attention to what it says, and see if it says anything about lost file fragments or correcting lost sectors or whatever.  The final screen will be a status report of sorts, see how many bytes you have in lost sectors.
