internet browser still hijacked

I have done what I read about in computer hope site about going into safe mode and reset the address browser and still my problem is not solve .
the problem is I have a laptop made by Compaq and recently decided to use an vonage phone for my house and use a dry loop to browse the internet through a broadband with a modem from time Warner called road runner and since i install the modem my address bar has been hijacked by AOL an it is not allowing me to use my address bar like i normally do when i type any thing. as I reset it in safe mode it is a little bit flexible but as soon as I  try to browse the net it is the first webbrowser that can come up instead of the usual intermet explorer that i do have.
