Are you saying that when you unzip a file wordpad opens? Or are you saying that after you have unzipped a file wordpad tries to open the file?

I am not sure.  This is what happens.  I download a zipped file.  When I unzip it I should get a folder with a file inside.  Instead what I get is a file that is opened with a red checkmark on it and when I click on it it has been converted to a word pad file which is not usable.

Open Winzip, go File>Open, and point it to zipped file. Will it unzip?
Windows version?

It unzips fine.  It is just that when that is completed it is now a wordpad file.  These are SGN files that I am downloading

I don't understand.
What do you mean by "it unzips fine".
At what point does it become Word file?

I don't know.  I unzip it like I do other files but when it is  unzipped it shows the file folder with a red check mark on it and when I open it is in word pad format.  When the other files are unzipped they have a folder but no check mark

What are the extensions of unzipped files?
some_file.xyz
"xyz" is an extension.

The zipped file reads  exactly like this:  CS8100-11429F_2008404.  When I position the pointer over the file it reads:  Files/Folders in zip file 1   CS8100-11429F.SGN.  Is that what you need?

First of all, open Windows Explorer, go Tool>Folder Options>View tab, and remove checkmark from Hide extensions for know file types:

You won't have to hover your mouse to see file extensions.

Now, the only files, I'm aware of with SGN extension belong to Sierra Print Artist Sign
Where did you get this zip file from?

Time out here...
We're not being overly inquisitive however the file type may be part of a solution and or issue.
What happens if you create a new empty folder and unzip the file to there...does it still open with Word Pad ? ?

If this is a State secret or highly sensitive info i can give you a link to the NSA encryption office and they may be able to decipher the file.

No it doesn't work.  In fact Idon't want to open the file just the folder to extract the file.  I tried going into the Control Panel-Folder Options-File Types-SGN-Change but the only change I can make is to open the file by another means.  I tried to change it to WinZip to open but it reverts back to WordPad.  I also tried to do the shiftkey/right click - properties-change and that didn't work either for the same reason.

Dload or have someone send you a zip file.
Locate that file and change it's association to Open With WinZip and see if this corrects things...

By the way are any of your other file associations screwed up that you know of ? ?

The other option would be to DLoad and install 7Zip and see if it handles the file properly...it's Free and if it does the same thing that means the file you are dealing with is corrupt and or unreadable...

At the moment I do not seem to be having any problem with any other files.  I wondered about downloading the WinRar program to try it.
