Hi I'm fitting a new motherboard, my old motherboard has 5 hard drives on it, 4 of them have XP on, the other one is used as a back up. I know I'll have to put a new installation on one but will the other 3! all then best Roger

Could you please re-state your question and describe more fully your current setup - also, why do you want to replace your current MB?

Hi, My current setup consists of a NS35-SL motherboard with a 2.20GHz Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU that's the highest one my MB will take and it's got 512 MB of RAM,it's only got 3 pci slots which is not enough and it's only USB 1. I have one 20 GB HDD running XP pro SP2 and a LG super multi DVD/RW connected to the primary on the MB, this is the only HDD that is used for the Internet, on the secondary i have a BENQ lightscribe DVD R/RW and a ordinary CD R/RW,i have four 120GB HDDs connected to a PCI raid card 3 of them are running XP pro no Sp's don't need them as these are not connected to the Internet one is for music, one for videos, and one for games, the fourth one has no OS on it as it is only used as a backup. the reason I'm changing my MB is for one i was given a secondhand ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe with a 3.2GHs CPU for my Birthday, for it's birthday it's getting 4 GB of RAM, it has 5 PCI slots and more importantly it has 8 USB 2- 2 not 1 ports, the other reason is that when I'm copying my videos to the computer after about 20 Min's of recording the audio and video start to go out of sync,I'm hoping this new MB will sought that out. Right back to my question after i have fitted the new MB i know that i will have to reinstall the OS on my C: drive because the NTLDR will be missing, my question is will i have to replace the OS on the other 3 HDD as well? I'm hoping that because the other 3 HDD will be in the main Boot sequence on Drive C: that i won't,. I hope this will give you a better idea of what my question is, all the best Roger

Ok - I think that I understand better, but I'm not sure about the non-internet drives, i.e., the drives connected to the RAID controller. And to make it easier for me, let's identify the HD's: 1 = internet, 2 = music, 3 = video, 4 = games, 5 = backup.

Drives #1, 2, 3, 4 EACH have has XP Pro on them it. It sounds like you use each drive to boot from depending on why you are using the computer, e.g., to go to the internet, you boot from drive #1; to play a game you boot from drive # 4, etc. In other words, you do not run any type of RAID, but, merely use the RAID card to connect the drives.

OR, drives 2,3 & 4 are in a RAID 5 and the array has XP Pro on it; therefore, you boot from drive #1 to go to the internet and boot from the array do do anything else.  (I'm just not sure what you mean by 4 of the drives have XP on them unless it's one of these two scenarios. EDIT: I also don't understand what this means:"I'm hoping that because the other 3 HDD will be in the main Boot sequence on Drive C: that i won't.")

Regardless, because of the massive nature of the change (MB and processor), each boot drive (array) would need to have the OS re-installed because the drivers and configuration data contained on the boot drive for the current MB will not be compatible with the new MB. I suspect that there is a non-destructive way to do this, but other people will need to advise you.

Best of luck.

Glad that you got the new board working :)

Not sure that I understand why you needed to re-install OS on one boot drive but not  any other, but, if it works, great!

I assume that you installed proper motherboard drivers on each boot drive.

Best of luck!

In future Roger keep in mind there is an easier way to achieve this when replacing major components...

Repair Install of XP

I've done it hundreds of times with success and it beats re-installing all your Apps...
Done properly all your Data and Programs are still there and you don't have all that extra work.

There's another method you can successfully use but it needs to be done beforhand and in your case the horse was already out of the barn but if you're interested let me know and i'll dig out the link...

The above Blue Link is for doing it after the fact...

Here  is the link for doing it before swapping out the board...

 ;)

NOTE: Have not tried it with Vista yet but any Win flavor prior to that up to XP works...

That can save a big pain in the *censored*! I've always bit the bullet and just re-installed everything on a clean hard drive.
