Extremely slow framerate in flash games.
    « on: July 21, 2008, 12:34:39 PM »
I'm getting ridiculously low FPS in flash games such as the ones on newgrounds.

I have Vista OS, 3.00 GHz processor, series 7 geforce graphics card, and 4GB RAM.
    16MB Broadband Internet.
I know my hardware can handle it.

There seems to be no problem running ordinary games (for example: Bioshock) at their maximum settings but a simple 2D flash game on the internet is extremely sluggish.

Now I've tried everything I could think of:

    - Set my system performance to disable fancy Vista visuals.
    - Closed every single non-used program (and I do mean everything, sidebar, MSN, anti-virus... Even automatic updates) via task manager and allocated firefox.exe's priority to High.
    - Disk defragmentation.
    - Installed the latest version of Abode flash.
    - Set the graphics on the game's setting to Low.
    - Disabled all on screen browser advertisements with Adblock.
    - Downloaded the game's SWF file and played using a SWF viewer.
    - I even went as far as formatting my PC and starting from scratch.
    EDIT:
    - Tried Internet Explorer. Same as Firefox.
    - Tried various other sites that host flash games. All the same.

So far none of these methods have worked. I'm not computer-retarded but I'm not a genius either. My only guess is the motherboard is f***ed, but I don't see how that can be possible when even Crysis is playable on Medium settings. Yet simple flash games seem to slow my FPS to a crawl.

Here's a picture of how slow it's running on Sonny, without me even using any spells or anything:

This game can be found here: http://www.kongregate.com/games/ArmorGames/sonny .

    Any suggestions?

    Can you try Internet Explorer?
Does this happen on all flash games?
(If you're not sure, try www.addictinggames.com)

Yes it happens on Internet Explorer too. I'll edit my original post to include stuff I've forgotten.

Addictinggames, Newgrounds, Kongregate... Doesn't seem to make any difference at all. I just don't understand what's going on.

I don't really know what the problem might be but you could try this:

      Download this game here:
      http://www.fileupyours.com/files/186352/Curve%20Ball.swf

      I got it off here:
      http://www.addictinggames.com/curveball.html

Try running the game on your desktop and see how well the game goes. (if it is slow or not)

23 FPS. Still kind of low especially for a game that simple.

So it seems it's not isolated to the Internet....

I'm afraid I don't know what else you could try here except uninstalling and reinstalling Flash.

When your computer is idle, what is the CPU % Usage and Page File Usage in Task Manager?

It just seems to randomly ping around.

The CPU is all over the place, the Physical Memory Usage is stuck at 683MB at the moment with only this window open. Firefox is sucking up 65,000 K memory.

System Idle Process (when it's there) tends to be at 99 but apparently that's normal.

Your Page File usage is pretty high, but it's Vista so what are you gonna do...

Try going to Start --> RUN --> type MSCONFIG and press Enter.
Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck as many programs as you can (except antivirus).
(note: you can still run the programs even it it is unchecked)

As far as that, I am afraid I don't really know what else you can do.

Hopefully someone will be along shortly to assist you further.  ;)

Done all that before I'm afraid. I might just suck it up and buy a new computer.

Thanks for the help though :).

            Your computer sounds new already.
Wait at least a day. Hopefully by then you will have more replies.  :D

I have noticed this as well using Win7 Ultimate 64bit and IE8.

At first the game(s) run fine, playing hardcore after a few days returning to the same game it lags so much it's unplayable.

I have created the arcade site:

A collection of the favourite free online flash games without adverts or popups.
            http://azzaboi.weebly.com

So I'm around and play flash games all the time. It hasn't had this issue that I'm aware of, a few gamers however have replied slow downs coming from the larger sites. It might be due to some advert, script leak or flash itself?

I have looked into it and as far as I can tell it seems to be an caching issue or memory leak with either IE8 or the Flash 10 plugin? You might want to try clearing the temporary internet files and the flash cache. Also ensure your flash plugin is up-to-date.

Please let me know if anyone else has any details or had this issue!

Flash 10 has a memory leak/bug in it, from what I can tell.

If I have flash 10 installed, FF crashes every few hours.... so at the very least it's less stable then 9.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
