This settings speeds up opening various Windows menus, like Start menu, and Add\Remove applet. It works in all Windows.

It requires registry change, so be careful, and backup your registry, first.

Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
In right pane double-click the MenuShowDelay, and change the value to 0 (no delay). If the value is already set to 0, don't change anything.
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

There's one I had forgotten ... and since getting this new HP running a while ago with XP had not thought to check that.  It was of course defaulted to the 400.

Thx a lot.  Love reg' tweaks - when I can remember them!!!

Mine was set to 200.
Not much of a change, since it's only in milliseconds, but....

Reminds me too - in the options for display of menus etc - I stop all ''fancy'' tricks, like zooming, dissolves, animations etc ..... I'm also a fan of TweakUI to turn off various unnecessary gizmo's - cumulatively this all speeds things up a bit.

Not quite so obvious these days with fast systems but IMO still worth doing.  MS has aseemingly only added over time more and more ''tricks'' - which may please newbies  - but this old man!!!  I'll keep it as KISS principle!! ;)

I had no chance to restart last night, but I just started my computer, and I can see visible difference.
Before, when I was opening folders with big numbers of items, like this one:

it usually took 2-3 seconds to populate. Now, it opens immediately.

It's a bit too fast for me. Not used to it.

Hm, this has never worked for me.  Just out of curiosity, I changed my setting of 400 to 400000000 (don't try this at home, kids!) and then restarted my computer.  There was no change.  Also no change when setting it to 0.  But I don't think the speed is very slow anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm not sure how it works, because my friend has two similar XP machines, and he said, he noticed a difference on one machine, but nothing on the other.
Seems to work on my Vista.

Ah...back to normal.

Every time I moved my mouse past All Programs, the menu just appears.

All Programs in the Start Menu? (You've been away from XP too long.)
