Kept getting accept/deny pop ups from spybot having downloading it a couple of weeks ago.

Was told to take teatimer whatever that is from start and then restart my puter.

I did but every time I restarted I kept getting asked to restart again.

In the end I put the tick back on teatimer but uninstalled spybot.

Guess what even though I uninstalled it completely or so I thought the pop ups still kept coming.

So the next advice I had was install a firewall as I only have windows.

I downloaded zone alarm and clicked the tutorial, page not displayed and guess what could not connect to the internet at all or outlook express so uninstalled zone alarm and phew was back on the internet.

However even though I completely uninstalled that I still had the toolbar showing and had to click on that to get rid of it.

So what am I doing wrong????

Download ResetTeaTimer.zip to the Desktop.
Unzip the file to the Desktop.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by Spybot's TeaTimer.
Delete ResetTeaTimer.zip when complete.

----------

Download and rename TrendMicro HijackThis.exe (HJT)

  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
.
  • Close HijackThis and rename it.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
  • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
  • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
  • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
.
  • From the desktop open HijackThis.
  • Important! If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
.
Although we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

Oh god now I am more confused. I don't think I can do all that.

I wil try the reset teatimer thing but it no longer shows in my start up menu so do I still need to do it?

Also what does the trend hijack thing do and is it important I do it.

I just don't want to get into deeper water than I am in already.

Yes that's all it is. TeaTimer should now be completely gone.

Posting a HijackThis log will let me see what all is running. Just uninstalling a firewall in many instances isn't good enough. Many times they will leave bits like a Service running that will negatively effect your PC.

Would it sort it if I did a system restore to a time before I downloaded the firewall?

It might, but then maybe not. System Restore usually just resets the Registry. It won't get rid of the System Files.

Although the instructions for HijackThis are lengthy it is really just a few steps. You can skip the renaming part.

Download TrendMicro HijackThis.exe (HJT)

  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A few things to fix.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
- O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ZoneAlarmSB Uninstall] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\UNINST~1.DLL,O -3

Important: Close all windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

Exit HijackThis and restart the computer to register the changes made by HijackThis.

----------

Your Java is out of date.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.

First install the new Sun Java Runtime Environment

Be sure to close all browser windows before beginning the install.

Remove the old version(s)

  • Go to add/remove programs and uninstall all old versions.
  • Be sure not to remove the new version that was just installed.
  • Download JavaRa.zip and unzip the file to your Desktop.
  • Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
  • Once complete exit JavaRA and delete the program.
  • Run CCleaner.
.
Download CCleaner Slim and save it to your Desktop.
When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.
Complete the installation then:

  • Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
    • Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
    • Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.
  • Go into Options > Advanced uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours
  • Click Cleaner on the left then Run Cleaner on the right to run the program.
  • Important: Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed before selecting Run Cleaner
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Registry' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
  • Exit CCleaner after it has completed its process.
.
----------

For a reliable, free (non intrusive) firewall I suggest PC Tools Firewall Plus.

OK i have done all that but when I rebooted I got this pop up.

You have used system configuration. Its in diagnostic or set up mode. It tells me to select normal start up and undo the changes. Then there is a box to tick to select dont show message or launch system utility when windows starts.

What do I select.

You have to give me time to reply....

After what step. HijackThis or the Java?

Have you used Msconfig?

Select Normal Startup mode.

Sorry I was panicking.

Used msconfig earlier in the day to put a tick against teatime but when I got the below message I put it back to normal start up mode.

Then when I did all of what you said which was the trend thingy and the hijack I rebooted. I have not done the java thing yet.

After rebooting I got that message again.

OK have put it back into normal and rebooted ....again.  LOL

I will do the java and c.c. cleaner thing tomorrow don't think I can cope with anymore tonight I am exhausted !!!!!

Just one final query. I used msconfig to remove msn messenger from popping up every time the puter starts up as my son downloaded it plus xfire. So how do I stop them  popping up as I want them to just be there if and when needed.

For a good Startup Manager open CCleaner then click Tools > Startup.

Click anything you don't want to run at startup then click Delete.

Msconfig is meant to be used for diagnosing problems. Using CCleaner will remove the startup from the Registry and cause less problems.

Oh I see, thank you very much.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your patience and help.

I only found this forum when I did a google search and didn't know if it was UK or just US.

I will certainly do the rest of what you have advised tomorrow after work.

Once again many many thanks you are a hun. Jill xxx
