I'm finding myself wondering what kind of system is in place to prevent people from posting illegitimate links though.

Yeah, I make use of that button sometimes myself.

I was just considering something that Slashdot uses, it shows where the link is pointed to if it's embedded.  I still don't know how secure that is, you've got to stop and read it.  We all know how well that works...   ;D

I think it definatly is a bad idea for embeded movies on the forum. Just think of all the Rick Rolls.

There was a forum this guy ran and he spammed up my old flash gaming forum and he had html allowed on his forum. I found his password posted in the html code of his website and made a sub-forum with a meta refresh code in it on his forum.

Yeah, I think links are the best option we have, We don't need embedded videos on the forum, It would complicate things.

Hello,

I don't know how this is implemented but would like to see specific boards listed in 'Unread posts' because I don't dig into MS boards and can add only the Linux and Programming boards where I'm interested in.

If you visit that forum you should see a image next to all unread topics and replies.

If you only have 2 boards to check this shouldn't be difficult...

It would be nice to have a way to add words to spell check.

I realize we all can't have custom dictionaries like in a word processor, and you can't allow everyone to add to a master custom dictionary.

If you could add a button next to spell check "submit word" and have one of the moderators approve or disapprove of adding it to a custom dictionary.

I always use spell check and fairly common words like Mozilla are not recognized.

Little by little the spell check would be kept up to date.

....while allowing crackers more opportunities to break the system.

The easiest thing to do is to just ignore the words that aren't in the dictionary or else just re-read your post before submitting.
Because the way SMF is built, the words aren't actually stored in the same database as the rest of the forum data. They are stored in a remote server and are then requested from that server every time a spell check is called. Because of that, remote connections to the server wouldn't be allowed!

Spell check is a job for a browser.

Not sure I've ever seen one in a forum.

Added another mod in my continued effort to help prevent spam on the forums. Signatures will no long support URL's or Pictures if the user does not have more than five posts. Below is an example of what would be displayed when a user/bot tries to create signatures with URL's.

Visit <a href=" *Link Removed* " >CH[/url] and   *Link Removed*   - Testing URL's

Example of profile that just happened to apply to this situation after this mod was added:

Maybe you should make it so that people with less than a certain post count can't put URLs in their post at all...
