Spydoctor problems

 New here,and not any kind of a computer guy ! I purchased online this morning,every time I try to download I get a security alert box that says security settings will not alow to download,I have e-mailed spydoctor/pc tools no reply I also made three attemps at there 1 800 number 20 to 30 minutes each time,my system is just a basic window xp, can anyone help an old guy in Idaho

1) Since you referenced "pc tools," I assume that you mean Spyware Doctor; not "Spydoctor."

2) You say that you "purchased" the software - normally, you would provide the credit card info and be redirected to a download page or receive a "code" in an email.

3) What web browser do you use? Try to clear the internet cache - for IE7: Open Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>General Tab>Browsing History>Delete>Temporary Internet Files.

4) Try to download again.

5) If no luck, stay after PC Tools until you get the program or a refund. There are many free programs that are nearly as effective as Spyware Doctor.

  Hi There, sorry Spyware doctor is correct,cleared history. still not working,on an older computer I had tried the free scan,It worked fine then I would get several e-mails stating that the world was going to end if I didn't purchase there fix !!! it took forever to make them leave me alone,I have a few problems I hope this new software will fix,I rarely purchase anything on line I just hate it when things like this happen,but with the price of gas figured this would work,oh well live and learn

I think post your problem in the Viruses/Malware section. I think this is a virus.

I agree with Mr. Google that you may have a current malware infection. It may or may not be interfering with your ability to download Spyware Doctor.

Follow these instructions: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html and post the logs here, in this topic. A malware specialist will look at them and move this topic, if required.

 Oh My Thanks for the help ,  I tried to down load the stuff you advised I still get the same alerts,also some where along the way this morning I read where I should delete my spybot program to help with the new download,which i did( I know not a good idea) I tried reinstall and that doen't work either,I have had some problems Yahoo instant messenger so I deleted it as well,

So...you are unable to download anything?

Did you run a Spybot scan, do you have an anti-virus program installed - can you run a scan?

Just in case - do you have your Windows CD?

  Thanks Carbon  I do not have a windows cd to reload,any danger of messing up my windows program  where I would have to start over ? I will wait to here back from you before I try this, I had a local small shop build my system, I did not get much paperwork or any disc's, I have no complaints at all since Aug of 06,the shop is now out of business

Evil - I don't think that he has a Spyware Doctor problem (other than trying to get his money back!), he couldn't download the program and, in fact, doesn't seem to be able to download anything.

Further, he said that he had a virus detected by Spybot or another program. 

Seemed to me that the inability to download could be the result of a trojan/virus.

  Can't thank you enough,I was able to use the restore feature to finally download the spyware,the bad news it restored my spybot program and I later found out that sometimes they do not like each other or play well together,after many e-mails or being on hold several times,I figured that their 24/7  customer service was off shore and most calls would be inbound from the U S  during regular hours,so at "O" dark thirty this morning my first call was answered by a very nice gentleman from down under,it didn't hurt that he is a fly fisher, he walked me through all the steps to restore my system , I sent an e-mail of thank you with a few more questions about things not yet up to speed,got a reply back from him today with more instructions/tasks to complete in the morning. Again thanks for the help

  Hi Folks, Follow up !! My system is now working great except I do not have any Spyware loaded, many e-mails sent only one reply after the first phone contact,my system worked ok for a day or two then Spyware Doctor seemed to take over at will,yesterday I was able get through on the phone again,this time not as helpful,I also mentioned I could not delete Yahoo I M , ( Error Box "Wise unistall could not open install.logfile) they had me delete their software and contact yahoo and I am on my own,I have been sending messages to yahoo for over a week, but still no reply
 my questions
1) which free spyware program is the best,I'm told that most are just as good as  the   one I purchased.
2) I'm being unfair to ask for a full refund from Spyware Doctor,my phone charges alone are past $ 40, I'm tied of all this !!
3) Is there a secrete to delete yahoo I M

Hi Idaho - Welcome back to Computer Hope!

There are many good, free programs but let's go back to the beginning before recommending any programs. What anti-virus, anti-spyware programs do you currently have? What anti-virus, anti-spyware programs have you ever had - installed once then uninstalled, like Spyware Doctor? Post back.

With regard to Yahoo IM, the program has to be closed before uninstalling it.
a) Close Yahoo IM.
b) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager. Click on the Applications tab, make certain that Yahoo IM is not running. If it is, highlight it and click "End Task."
c) Use the normal, Windows uninstall programs routine in Control Panel to uninstall Yahoo IM.
d) Let us know if you are successful.

  I was Instructed to delete Spyware Doctor so now I do not have any spyware program installed,I did have spybot loaded since 2006 when I purchased this computer ( it came with it loaded )
 I tried again to delete Yahoo IM no luck same error mess " Wise uninstall could not open install.logfile "  ??

 AMD Sempron processor
 3000+
 1.81GHz 192 MB of ram
 total size 57.2 Gb 50.5 GB free

It looks like you do not have any real time (works all of the time in the background, not just when you run it) anti-virus or anti-spyware. If this is the case, I would recommend that you get and install Avast!, an anti-virus and anti-spyware program in one. You can download it here: http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html. Download the "4 Home" version.

Install Avast!, post back and we'll take care of Yahoo Messenger after Avast! is running properly.

    Hi there again, I installed avast,it scan-ed my system,no virus ( I think ) will need to read the tutorial, there are three files in the "Chest" I clicked on the other two icons and nothing was there  my system seems ok a tiny bit slower,but I guess it takes a few extra seconds for this new software to check for virus before something opens
 
now how about getting yahoo im off my system and is the yahoo problem just me or are others having trouble ; example last night before I turned off my system I got " waiting to shut down Yahoo IM " before I could turn things off *&&^^%^ I never logged in !!! when I turn on it in morning, i have to go through the usual yahoo log in which I refuse, one reason I want yahoo off is it seems to have a mind of it's own when I'm logged on,I get all kinds of notices that someone wants to chat  ? I only signed up to chat with a fellow Fly fisher over in Oregon.now we just use hotmail

Glad that you got Avast! installed. Yes, I suspected that it would slow down your system a little (have you ever thought about adding memory?) - but it ought not be too slow. In particular, if the program is set to check for new files at startup, your system will be very slow for about three minutes while Avast! checks for and installs new definitions. Additionally, Avast! does a rootkit (very deeply embedded virus) scan at startup. If you can, just wait 3 - 4 min after startup before trying to do anything.

As for Yahoo Messenger - are you certain that the program has been shut down before you tried to uninstall it? Did you check in Task Manager? Assuming that the program was shutdown prior to uninstalling it: download and re-install Yahoo Messenger again to the same location. This may sound counterintuitive, but, the re-install ought to give us the ability to uninstall cleanly. If not, don't worry; we can uninstall it manually

 Yes Yahoo messager was shut down,I was able to delete the tool bar,plus another one ( can't remember)  the one left is messager, so I will take your advise and reinstall today and nuke it this evening or in the am

Do you feel that I still need Spyware Doctor ? when all this started (look at my past posts) Spybot & S D would not work together, so I would bet the same will happen if I try to use both,also I'm NOT 100% happy with S D customer support I did find the first fellow helpful,but the fact that I have had only two e-mail replies since 8/31 plus all the phone calls, the last person tried to fix things,helped get S D deleted and reloaded then deleted again,he figured the problem was mine/yahoo IM,I felt he just wanted to get me off the phone  so I'm left with no spyware and out $39 ,

With your system, and believing that you are not a "high risk" web surfer, I do not believe that you need Spyware Doctor (but, get your money back!) Also, I would disable any Spybot "Teatimer" protection. Remember, Avast! protects you against spyware/adware as well as against viruses.  I would, however, recommend that you download and install SpywareBlaster:  http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html. This neat program does not require any system resources (will not slow down your system) and will provide an extra layer of protection. After you download SpywareBlaster: 1) check for updates; 2) return to the "Protection Status" page and "Enable all protection." Manually update the program about once a month, then, "Enable all protection" again.

Let me know how you make out with Yahoo Messenger.

And, again, you have 256 MB of RAM memory. Assuming that you have what is known as DDR memory, you can upgrade to 512 MB for ≈$15, or, 1GB for ≈30.  I think that you would see an improvement in system performance if you upgraded, but, it's certainly not necessary.

  Spybot has been removed,I have requested a refund from S D but I don't think I will here back anytime soon without another phone call or three,now here is something very strange,I installed Yahoo I M again note !! even if you check the boxes that you don't want "Tool Bar,Browser," it installs anyway !this is one of the many reasons I do not want anything to do with Yahoo ,I went to my control panel and removed all 4 yahoo items w/restart  checked control panel again SUCESS it's gone.  This morning at start up guess what,yahoo is still here !!! I opened my control panel, it is NOT  listed at all just a little happy face at the lower right hand corner of my screen,for fun I logged in to see if it works and it does.
Options 1) take this whole system to the landfill
             2) burn it in a fire pit so It can't reproduce

 I will check out the software you suggested and install it, but I would really like to get this yahoo issue resolved  before I add more stuff to my system

So, you uninstalled Messenger and it is still there.

In Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) go to: C:\Program Files\Yahoo, click the "+" sign. Right-click and "delete" the entire Messenger folder. Delete any Messenger icons on your desktop.

Okay - the worst thing that can happen is that your computer is rendered inoperable. But, we'll set a restore point so that won't happen

First, let me change the instructions in post # 26. I suspect that you do not want anything from Yahoo, if correct, navigate to: C:\Program Files\Yahoo and delete the entire Yahoo folder.

A) Set (create) a Restore Point: 1) Go to: Start>Run, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and click OK. 2) On the "Welcome to System Restore screen," select "Create a restore point" and click "next." 3) Name the restore point, click "create" 4) Wait for the restore point to be created then click "close." (Note the "\", this is from the key under the backspace key, not the "?" key.)

B) After the restore point has been created, go to Start>Run and type regedit and, click on "OK." Click the "+" sign by HKEY_CURRENT_USER, click the "+" sign by SOFTWARE, scroll down to the Yahoo folder, right-click on the folder and "delete." Close the registry editor by going to File>Exit.

C) Re-start the computer. Messenger should be gone.

  Last night I got through the first step,I deleted all the yahoo stuff I could find,except one IM file that I could not delete,It was late so I turned off my system for the night,fired it up this am and no Yahoo IM bugging to to log in ( this is a good thing !!!) decided to continue with your instructions,got to "name restore point click create/ wait for the restore point to be created then click close", at this place It asks for a restore point ??  Date ?? Ok please bare with me for a moment,back on 8/31
(computer hope forum) I did the restore feature I picked a random date 8/1 or ?? and was able to download spyware doctor,that is also when the Yahoo IM would not go away,and the beginning of more problems,I don't want to mess things up here, so should I type in a date of say 9/13

Idaho - Looks like you are making progress!

Ok, I assume that you, in fact, created a Restore Point. In that case, you should only be asked for a name - the date and time will be supplied automatically. Double check to make certain that you are not trying to "restore to a date & time." On the opening screen, click "Create Restore Point."

   There was no Yahoo folder or icon listed,I guess all the other stuff I/we did fixed it  ? Since I didn't get the Yahoo log in this morning at start up and the Icon on the lower right side of my screen is gone as well,I was planning on loading spyblaster now
