You need to pick one antivirus and uninstall the other. Norton or Kaspersky.

Let me know what you decide.

I uninstalled the Norton A/V when I installed Kaspersky.  Norton SystemWorks is a disk management type program.  Do I need to uninstall it also?

There are a lot of Norton entries in the log besides System Works.

I don't know if this tool will remove System Works but I don't think it will. Can you reinstall it if so?

Download the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) to your Desktop.

Once downloaded please close ALL open browsers, also save any work because this may require a restart.
  • Go to your desktop and double click on the removal tool and then click Setup.
  • Once open Click Next
  • Accept the license agreement and click Next
  • Type in the letters/numbers that you see into the text box then click Next.
  • Then click Next and the tool will start running.
  • Once finished restart the PC and run the tool again to ensure everything has been removed.
  • Delete Nortonremoval tool from your Desktop.

Looks better.

The next steps are removing a few leftovers and cleaning up unnecessary startups. The programs will not be effected you will just need to launch them manually when you want to use them. It will also help improve the performance of the computer.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

- R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://totalinternet.snap.com:8005/channel/search/0,11,totalinternet-0,00.html

Important: Close all windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

Exit HijackThis.

----------

Note: the below instructions were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, DO NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system

Go to Start > Run and type notepad.exe then click OK

Copy and paste the below into Notepad and save as fixme.reg to Your Desktop

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\Run]
"TkBellExe"=-
"Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=-
"SunJavaUpdateSched"=-
"SymNRT"=-
"traySantaCruz"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MSMSGS"=-
"Microsoft Works Update Detection"=-

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click it. Answer Yes when prompted to merge with the Registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it did not work.

Delete the fixme.reg from the Desktop.

----------

Download Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to the Desktop to remove Windows Messenger.

Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Unzip the file on the Desktop. Open the MessengerDisable.exe and choose the bottom box - Uninstall Windows Messenger and click Apply.

Exit out of MessengerDisable then delete the two files that were put on the Desktop.

Run CCleaner and then restart the computer. <- Important!

----------

Suspicious files to scan

Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)

1. Copy and paste the following file path into the Suspicious files to scan box on the top of the page.
Code: [Select]
C:\PROGRA~1\clickthebutton\clickthebutton.exe2. At the upload site, click once inside the window next to Browse.
3. Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.
4. Click on the Upload button.
This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
[color="Red"]Important:[/color] Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
5. Once the Scan is completed scroll down and click on the Copy to Clipboard button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
6. Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of the below links. Be sure top save it to the Desktop.

Link #1
Link #2

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) before starting ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your antivirus, and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

For Windows XP Systems install the Recovery Console:

- If you are using Windows XP and do not already have the Recovery Console installed, please ensure your Internet connection is active (if possible) and click Yes.
- If for some reason your Internet is not working click No.
- If you are not using Windows XP, you will not be prompted.
- When prompted to accept the EULA click OK.
- Accept Microsoft's EULA (Click Yes).
- When you are told that the RC is installed correctly click YES to continue scanning for malware.

When finished ComboFix will produce a log for you.
Post the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Important: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Remember to re-enable your antivirus and antispyware protection when ComboFix is complete.

Everything looks OK but I keep coming back to this.

C:\PROGRA~1\clickthebutton\clickthebutton.exe

Do you know what it is? I am finding conflicting information on it, some say it's either adware or a trojan but some say it's OK.

Could be part of Dell Media Experience but with the truncated file path it's hard to tell. Even then it should be in C:\Program Files\Dell and not C:\Program Files\clickthebutton. I'm pretty sure it's something factory installed and isn't needed in any way. Bloatware...

I would suggest having HijackThis and fix it. Especially since you don't even use it or know what it is. Plus it's running from the HKCU\Run Key and that is odd in itself.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClickTheButton] C:\PROGRA~1\clickthebutton\clickthebutton.exe

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ClickTheButton"=-
Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click it. Answer
Yes when prompted to merge with the Registry.

Delete the fixme.reg from the Desktop.

----------

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox
  • Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /u
  • Then hit Enter.
  • The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
  • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Set a new, clean Restore Point.
.
----------

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your Desktop.

Alternate download link

Note: Vista users must use Run As Administrator
  • Under Main: Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note that your system will run slower for a reboot or two after having used this tool so don't panic.

----------

Download OTCleanIt.exe and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it yourself.
Important: Restart the computer before continuing.

---------

How is everything now?

Seems to be doing better.  I noticed a difference shortly after starting this process.  I will have to do some system scans and defrag before I can be sure.  I would like to thank you for the help.  Could have never done it by myself.
Thanks,
Chad

Sounds good. There are a few more things you will want to do as well as some suggestions.

For defragging I don't know what yo uuse but if it's the built in defrag here is something better. Don't run it until you have flushed System Restore though.
You can use the built in Windows Defrag or a faster FREE program. Defraggler is very effective and easy to use. Be sure to clean out temp files and restart the computer just before using this.

Disable the System Restore Utility to prevent re-infection from an old one

1) Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2) Click on the System Restore tab.
3) Put a check mark next to Turn off System Restore on All Drives
4) Click the OK button.
5) You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click the Yes button.

Now re-enable System Restore

To re-enable the System Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.

1) Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2) Click on the System Restore tab.
3) Remove the check mark next to Turn off System Restore on All Drives
4) Click the OK button.

---------

Use the Secunia Software Inspector to check for out of date software.
  • Click Start Now
  • Check the box next to Enable thorough system inspection.
  • Click Start
  • Allow the scan to finish and scroll down to see if any updates are needed.
  • Update anything listed.
.
----------

Go to Microsoft Windows Update and get all critical updates.

----------

Here are some great FREE tools to help you keep from getting infected again. These tools use little or no resources so won't slow down your PC.

Concerned about Browser Security? Consider using Mozilla Firefox 3.0 with Adblock Plus and NoScript

To prevent unknown applications from being installed on your computer install WinPatrol 2008

OK  I downloaded most of the recommended programs and most everything is up to date.  However, I could not get a couple of the players updated.  Will try some more later.  Thanks

Adobe Flash Player?

Download the Flash Player Uninstaller and save it to your desktop.

Run the uninstaller program and then reboot your computer to complete the uninstall.

Download and install the latest version of Flash Player
