 hello all,

am considering a new monitor to replace my 17'' CRT but am afraid that some games would not be compatible a 19'' resolutions. The monitor am supposed to buy is Samsung Wide with aspect ratio of 15:10 ( what i usually see in most games is 4:3 or 16:9 or 1:3..etc ) but never 15:10 except in Burnout paradise??

so if someone has more information on that or owns a 19'' , please tell us if you were able to run games on it?

thanks

I own a 19 inch Acer, but it's also 16:9 ratio. Also- I've never heard of a 15:10 ratio, 3 : 2 ratio maybe?

However as per your inquiry depending on your graphics card and driver you can often set it up to maintain aspect ratio.

I thought most widescreen monitors were 16:10 and TVs are 16:9... Can you specify the model you want to get? Most games either support widescreen resolutions or there is some way to force them or a hack or a registry edit or something.

I use this site, it has a lot of good info for many games, what resolutions they support, workarounds, etc.

well, so everyone here believes me am gonna post a screenshot from burnout paradise where 15:10 is mentioned..there is even 15:9!

anyway, i cant specify the model exactly..what i know is that its Samsung or LG..

btw, am not planning on running the games on higher resolutions- have 8600 GT 256 - do you think this is a backstep as well cuz i tried running GTA IV earlier on a 16'' Samsung and the fonts looked indinsitinct and intermingling cuz i was running it on low resolution..

GTA4 is a lost cause if you don't have a quad core and at least an 8800GTX. By the way, if you don't use the native resolution on an LCD monitor everything will look blurry. Pretty much all of the widescreen monitors I've seen are 1280x800, 1440x900, or 1680x1050 which are all 16:10. I'd advise against getting a monitor which uses a resolution other than these, because not many games will support it.

thanks for the info soviet genius .. so thats why fonts were all intermingling in GTA IV when i used the 16'' LCD Wide..i was using a resolution below 1280x768..
seems i will have to keep my good ol' CRT ..if things would look blurry on lower resolutions, no need to bother with a switch..i think the price seduced me in the first place .. i have to pay only an extra 30$ to get a 19'' W LCD instead of a 16'' W LCD..well that sounds fishy if u ask me??lol ...

nyway..thanks everyonee for the help

I had the exact monitor and I played WoW, CS Source, COD4, and tons of other games without any problems.

Some older games do not support wide screen resolutions and those games will look distorted on a wide screen (though they will usually still play just fine). Many older 3D games and (to my knowledge) all older 2D games are like this.

Some wide screen monitors support displaying 4:3 resolutions (like those of older games) on a wide screen without distortion (basically it scrunches it in on the screen with black areas on both sides). I have an LG Flatron W2252TQ (22" widescreen) that does this through it's on-screen menus.

Additionally, many video cards have a similar feature. I know that both of my laptops (one with an Intel video chipset and one with Nvidia) support this as does my desktop's Nvidia card. There's usually an option phrased "maintain aspect ratio for lower resolutions" or something to that effect in the video card's options.

Anyway, keep that in mind if it applies to you or any games you want play.  ;D
