Yep. Some RAM is rare.
If you go to crucial, and you don't find the RAM for your computer, I can assure you, you can find it somewhere else, but be prepared to cough up at least $100.

And SDRAM, EDO RAM, or heaven forbid FPM RAM are even harder to find. I don't think they sell DIP chips anymore...

no they do sell the DIPs you just have to look in Mail-Order catalogs...and i do need a new rig soon, SD is already hard enough to find the right speed and all.

DIPs? the chips with legs? The ones that look like a graveyard on a 286 motherboard? And ironically rise slowly like ghosts with heat and cooling?

Although with a 1GB stick of DDR2 RAM being about $150 installed, that could fix him up too.

I voted two in two categories:

  • Notebook with Vista Home Premium SP1: 2GB
  • Desktop with XP Pro SP3: 512MB
  • Desktop running Linux Ubuntu 8.04LTS: 512MB

I also have two older computers that are not being used (probably headed for next local recycling drive), so I did not vote on them.  One has Win 98SE, the other, Win ME.  They both have 128MB.

Ha! Well, one of them is about 12 1/2 years old; it was originally a 75MHz Pentium with 8MB of RAM. It was my primary computer for years and numerous upgrades took it up to a 200MHz processor with 128 MB of RAM, the maximum RAM it will support.  If space were and clutter were not issues, I might keep it for no other reason than sentimental value.  If you lived nearby (central Ohio), you could have it.  I know the organization conducting the recycling drive will truly process it for recycling.

The other one was given to me by folks with the understanding I would turn it in to the recycling drive; I belong to the organization conducting the recycling drive, a local computer users' group.  In this case, I'm sure they will not recycle this one, they'll offer it to a qualified low-income recipient.  This computer is a Pentium III, 800 MHz, and will support up to 512MB of RAM, so it could run Win 2K or Win XP.
