can't close my programs

I can't close the programs out at the bottom of my screen?  If I right click I choose delete and it asks if I want to send it to recycle.  The programs never close out?

Delete will delete the shortcut itself.

I have a compaq with windows xp.  I don't know all the other details...

It has been going on for about a couple of months.  I know, you're guessing why I didn't ask about this sooner...It is my home computer and I have a 5 year old, so I don't get to use a stationary home computer at all, but I went to print some coupons yesterday and those open programs at the bottom of the screen are driving me nuts, plus it is very slow.  I don't have the time to commit to fix it, so I just walk away.  I have a laptop which I love because it's portable and my work computer which I use everyday all day.  My husband who's not computer literate at all, uses the stationary computer and probably messed it up. 

should I take it to geek squad?  They are very expensive.

Can you capture an image of the screen, so we can see what this really is?

Sounds like you have an extra toolbar.

Try right-clicking on an empty area of the taskbar; the menu should have a "toolbars" submenu. Try deselecting all of these items. Note that you will need to also make sure there is no checkmark on "Lock the taskbar".
