W2K SP4 knocks IE6 offline...

I just finished reformatting my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 2000, but when I go to install the service packs, it knocks Internet Explorer offline.  I've already tried the work around in KB 833974.  Does anyone else have any ideas on what I can try?

PS - I've already tried installing SP2 and SP3 to see if the problem was specific to SP4, but got the same problem.

skibunny5....when you say it knocks explore offline.....Are you on dialup or hi-speed. Does it close your internet connection or just shut down the connection to the update centre .......still leaving you on line and able the browse?
