Fans of the free version of AVG 9 will have to wait a bit longer, as AVG always delays the release of Free until after the full suites have been made public.

Is AVAST 5 which is scheduled for release later this month decent? I think so but what do you think?

I think AVG 9 has lost itself in recent months and are sort of having difficulty coming out of the water for some reason.  :P

AVG has been having problems since ver. 8.0, ver. 8.5 wasn't doing much better. We'll see what ver. 9.0 comes up with.

Anyone tried this version? I've been holding off on upgrading.

I upgraded from 8.5 to 9.0 a few days ago.  No problems whatsoever so far.

Okay, I tried the upgrade to 9.0 and it was horrible for me. Immediately web pages started to load at crawling speed or not load at all, this despite my connection speed and wireless signal strength remaining unchanged. I tried unchecking the link status or whatever it was called that is supposed to check links before you can go to the web page. No difference. Uninstalled AVG 9.0 and boom, everything back to normal.

Using FF 3.5.5, I'm going to try Avast antivirus.

I suspect you have other issues.  If not, then why would your experience be so much different from those of us who've experienced no such problems with it?

I somehow saw this coming as another bash AVG thread...

They have addressed and fixed whatever issues everyone keeps bringing up Ad Naseum...

JMHO.

I have no interest in "bashing" AVG. I have two desktops and a laptop that all have AVG on them and I have used it as my anti-virus since at least the 7.5 version and maybe before (I think I first got it about 2006 but not positive).

Previously I had no major problems with it on any of the machines. I had every intention of continuing my use of AVG. That's why I loaded the upgrade to 9.0. Do I have other "issues" with my computer? I don't know but I doubt it. If I do, these "issues" have not manifested themselves in any other ways. What I do know is is this:

1) Prior to installing AVG 9.0 and using AVG 8.5, browser worked fine.

2) After installing 9.0, immediate problems with browser loading multiple different web pages. This was not a individual web page problem nor a problem with my connection. The problems were observed over multiple on-line sessions with shut-downs in between.

3) After uninstalling 9.0, web loading problems cease.

In the meantime, I have loaded Avast on this computer to try it. I am keeping AVG 8.5 on the other computers for now.

I resent the implications that reporting my legitimate experience makes me some kind of anti-AVG troll.

Just my opinion...
My philosophy regarding anything (including computer software) is very simple:
Once burned, I don't touch it.
As the user above, I used AVG for number of years, until ver. 8.0 came up.
Had a lot of problems with it. What to do? Simple.
Forget it.
There are other AV programs out there. Why to bother?
Being on number of computer board, I've seen constant problems with 8.0 and 8.5.
Maybe, maybe 9.0 is some miracle, but personally, I don't care.

Yeah, just find a working alternative. As long as an AV updates everyday or frequently, and has realtime scanning, then I think it's all ok.
