recovery of overwritten files

Hi-
Can anyone tell me if and how I can recover an .xls file that I accidentally over wrote. Its not the end of the free world but it sure would make my life a whole lot easier.

The more you use it, more likely the space will be used for a new file.

If you want to know, in layman's terms, there are 3 types of space on a hard drive (HDD).

Free Space 1 (these are just names to represent it)
Free Space 2
Used Space

Free space 1 is space on your hard drive that has NEVER been used. It contains no data whatsoever.
Free space 2 is space on your hard drive that has been used, but has then become usable. It contains data but the data can be overwritten. Your computer uses the oldest free space 2 as possible, if it must. The data can be recovered, unless you use a super magnet...
Used space is self-explanitory, it is what it is.
