Hi, I have a five year old Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop.
It has been getting slower each month, and in the last week, very slow.

I went ahead and did the scans that were suggested and have attached the logs.

I would like to know if you can figure out based on the logs and information provided why my computer is running so slow.

I also would like to ask if there is anything I can do to give the computer a jolt or if I should look at getting a new one.
Before I go out and spend money, I want to be sure I have exhasuted all options to get this going.

Thanks.

Hello Bluecountry and welcome to Computer Hope Forums. There are only a couple of issues to deal with in your logs.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

04 - hkus\s-1-5-19\..\runonce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /c move /y "%systemroot%\system32\syssetub.dll" "%systemroot%\system32\syssetup.dll" (user 'local service')

04 - hkus\s-1-5-19\..\runonce: [nlhr] rundll32.exe %systemroot%\system32\advpack.dll,launchinfsection %systemroot%\inf\nlite.inf,c (user 'local service')

04 - hkus\s-1-5-19\..\runonce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (user 'local service')

04 - hkus\s-1-5-20\..\runonce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /c move /y "%systemroot%\system32\syssetub.dll" "%systemroot%\system32\syssetup.dll" (user 'network service')

04 - hkus\s-1-5-18\..\runonce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /c move /y "%systemroot%\system32\syssetub.dll" "%systemroot%\system32\syssetup.dll" (user 'system')

04 - hkus\.default\..\runonce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /c move /y "%systemroot%\system32\syssetub.dll" "%systemroot%\system32\syssetup.dll" (user 'default user')

04 - hkus\s-1-5-19\..\runonce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /c move /y "%systemroot%\system32\syssetub.dll" "%systemroot%\system32\syssetup.dll" (user 'local service')

04 - hkus\s-1-5-19\..\runonce: [nlhr] rundll32.exe %systemroot%\system32\advpack.dll,launchinfsection %systemroot%\inf\nlite.inf,c (user 'local service')

09 - extra button: aim - {ac9e2541-2814-11d5-bc6d-00b0d0a1de45} - c:\program files\aim\aim.exe (file missing)

023 - service: kodak camera connection software (kodakccs) - unknown owner - c:\windows\system32\drivers\kodakccs.exe (file missing)

Important: Close all open windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

Once completed, exit HijackThis.

Your logs look clean so I'm suspecting that the slowness is not atributted to malware or viruses. You can try this to see if we can increase the speed. Please try to do all the steps.

Thanks....is there anything else I can do?

I tried doing some of the steps on the link you provided...I thought it was helping...and then came today.

My browser is really slow.
I type in a web address...it takes forever to load.
I have to hard wire my computer to the modem, because wireless no longer works as of today, and yet it still is running super slow.

Further...if I want to have additional tabs...it really gets slow.
I tried mozilla and IE and both have the same problem.

I am not sure if I made things worse.

Is there any reason as to why the browser is slow to load pages, and can not handle loading multiple pages, and what I can do to check and fix?

Can you give me some info about your computer? Ram, speed, size of HDD and amount of free space. Also, please give me another HJT log.

As mentioned in reply #3 I need the RAM, Computer speed which can be found by clicking on Start, right-clicking on My Computer and there info is there. I also need the size of free space on your HDD. Click Start, My Compuer, right-click the C: drive and tell me the free space you have. Do you have high-speed internet? Is your computer slow when not on the internet?

Hello bluecountry. You didn't tell me if the computer was running slowly when not on the internet. Also, installing more RAM would certainly help your performance. 1 mb would really help and it's not too expensive.

•Start HijackThis
•Click on the Misc Tools button
•Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
•Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a Notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste this file in your next reply.

1)  My computer runs very slow, at times, when I am browsing or in other applications, such as microsoft word.
I am always connected to the internet by high speed but not always browsing.
I frequently notice when my anti-virus (AVG) is running, the PC becomes excruciatingly slow.

2)  Do you feel, given everything described, this is not about a virus/malware or anything other simply adding RAM?
-If so, what leads you to think so?
-What do you think should be done?

3)  File attached.

I think you mean when your AVG is up-dating. I noticed that same thing on my pc when I'm receiving up-dates and I have 2 mb of RAM. I'm quite sure that this isn't related to malware and that adding extra RAM will make a difference. I will also include a link at the bottom of this message concerning slow computers.

Add or Remove Programs

1. Click on the Windows Start button and click on the Control Panel
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. When the Add or Remove Programs window has fully populated, check for

Code: [Select]
Ask Toolbar
Viewpoint Media Player
4. Uninstall these programs

You can also uninstall HJT when you are finished with it. Keep SAS and MBAM, update them and run them about once a week.

Download Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to the desktop to remove Windows Messenger.

Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Unzip the file on the desktop. Open the MessengerDisable.exe and choose the bottom box - Uninstall Windows Messenger and click Apply.

Exit out of MessengerDisable then delete the two files that were put on the desktop.

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

1) OK....I was able to find all but 2 or so of those in hijack and deleted.
-Anything else I should I do?

2) Do you have any explanations as to why my PC slows up (both on and off line) at times, especially when the AVG is updating?
-Is there anything else I can do to test?

3) Would more RAM be the solution?

4) Another problem, last week, I could unplug my PC and work without it plugged to the AC outlet.
So one day I took it out the local Panera for 10 minutes.
Since that time a few things have happened.
-Whenever I unplug the PC it loses power, instantly.
-When I have the PC shut off, or if it is on and plugged in, no matter, the battery light and the center light flicker between 'green' and 'orange'
Why is it doing this and what does it mean.

Again my PC has three lights.....the screen light...a middle light...and the battery light.
-The battery and middle light rotate between 'green' and 'orange.'

5) Last...my PC fan...ever since I got it 5+ ago....runs pretty loud most of the time.

Run HJT again and send me the log. I'd like to have another look.

You can defrag your harddrive and you can also download a diagnostic program for your harddrive to test it.

It would certainly help.

I would say that your battery won't accept a charge. That's probably what the orange and green lights are trying to tell you.

You could try this:

StartupLite

Download StartupLite by MalwareBytes to your Desktop.
Doubleclick StartupLite.exe to launch the program.
Ensure the Disable box is checked.
Click Continue.
A pop up message will tell you the unecessary startup items in your list have been disabled and ask you to restart your computer.
Re-start your computer.
