I am using a compaq computer and a dell mouse and keyboard. About an hour after starting up the computer, the mouse freezes, the computer still runs the programs, it does not crash. I then restart the computer and the mouse works but freezes again after an hour or less. I have gone into control panel to look at the drivers and it says everything is working properly. I don't understand why this happens. Please help....... Thanks

That has absolutely nothing to do with the OP's problem.

The OP has a mouse that freezes, not a system that freezes. Your link is not relevant to the problem

Minosis, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to CH.  The situation is regrettable, but let's see if we can get this going for you.

Please try not to pay any attention to blake00, he seems to have some attitude issue that he needs to deal with.

Can you tell me if this is a PS/2 mouse or if it is a USB mouse?

No, but it could be a bad mouse. Have you tried a different one?

I haven't tried another mouse, but I've tried the mouse on 2 different computers and it works fine on them.

I can not remember how to get to safe mode. I've found out its not just the mouse that freezes, the keyboard and my wireless reciever freeze too. everything that is connect to a USB port freezes.

Go to Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced Settings for your power plan and make sure you don't have the usb ports powering down after a period of time

Well, clearly the usb ports are losing power at some point. Again, you need to try safe mode.

Then it's either a program starting with Windows that is interfering with the usb ports or it is something in the power setting that is shutting off the usb ports after a period of time. You can open msconfig and on the startup tab choose "selective startup" (disable everything from loading) and reboot. If things work as expected, start enabling the processes one at a time, rebooting after each, until the problem recurs. You'll have identified the culprit. You can also look again through the power options.

It won't solve the problem, but you could use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard, if possible. this can help you diagnose what's happening when the ports lose power (perhaps the driver has problems?).
