Drivers not recognized

Recently purchased a new dvd rw drive, while the old drive was out, my computer restarted itself with updates. Now not only does my computer not recognize when new hardware is attached, but it does not recognize the other dvd drive that I didn't touch. How do I fix this? I have windows xp, my computer is a Dell Intel Pentium 4.

First, open device manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks. If there are, post back and tell us. If not, try a repair install:

1) Install the new dvd drive
2) Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option and do a repair install.
3) Download and install all MS Updates

1.  IDE cable is loose or
2.  You did not configure the Master/Slave jumper or
3.  You did not change Setup (BIOS) configuration to Auto instead of None.

oakland - my strength is more software than hardware oriented, so you should probably try the suggestions in the above post first. You can always do the repair install later if needed.

I checked the device manager and there were no yellow exclamation marks.  I am not sure how to boot the CD XP.

But here is some more info that I probably should have included in the beginning.

 Drive 3 not found: Parallel ATA PATA-1  (pri ide slave)

Press F2 for  utility set up


The IDE is in securely, I didn't change any configuration of the jumper I actually don't think I can.  

It is possible that I need to do to  change teh setup BIOS,  I don't really know wihtat aht is ,  I"ll look for it on the utiltiy setup page .

If you have more than 2 drives, you may have to change the jumper on the drive.  How many drives on each IDE and how are they connected, i.e  HDD#1, CD#1, CD#2?  Master is at the end of the cable, slave is in the middle of the cable.
Fill in the blanks:
Primary IDE Master_____
Primary IDE Slave_____
Secondary IDE Master_____
Secondary IDE Slave_____

I believe I only have 2 drives, not including the hard drive Drive C, I have a dvd drive which was drive D and the new dvd rw drive  which was drive E that i am using to replace a cd rw drive that was broken, I thought that since I wasn't making any additions that the cables would be connected as they were previously.

Could the problem possibly be on the set up page where the booting sequence is posted,  if the first drive (drive #1) it tries to boot is not there, it prohibits the other drives from being detected? Maybe I should change some things on my setup?

List ALL the drives in the machine and how they are connected...

1.  1 hard drive and 2 optical drives.
2.  They would, if the jumpers are set the same.
3.  Setup says the drives cannot be found, so I'm thinking the connections or jumpers are wrong.
I have made the assumption all the drives are PATA (IDE) and not SATA.  Can you confirm?  PATA have jumpers, SATA don't.

the 2 optical drives are both PATA but the hard drive is listed as a SATA on the utility set up page.

 
Thank you for all your help.  I had the jumper on the back of the new dvd rw in the incorrect spot.  Such a small yet huge thing to over look. Thank you all for your patience. Another mission accomplished
