Unfortunately, much of the information is wrong and/or outdated:

Here is the list of security tools that supports Windows 98 and Windows ME:
Anti Virus Software
Freeware: Antivir Personal Edition Classic, Avast 4 Home Edition, Grisoft’s AVG Personal Edition, Bitdefender 8, Free Edition, ClamWin Free.

AntiVir and AVG are two I know for sure that do not support Win98.

Avira doesn't support 98 anymore. Same goes for AVG.
I'm not aware of BitDefender free.
ClamWin doesn't work in real time.

Yes as Broni says you can use Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1368 its that last version that will run on all Windows versions. I use it on my WinME, WinXP and Vista machines an its free. I actuall use Avast 5 on my WinXP and Vista machines but 4.8 ran on them perfectly, I only changed to 5.0 last week. ;)

I am using Solo antivirus 2011 version and it is effectively working with my Windows 98 system. You can download and try Solo from  They are providing frequent signature updates too.

I too have been lookind for a free AV for Win98 with no success, yet. Although many advertise that they are 98 compatible, once downloaded a message appears saying that a newer version of Win was expected. As Broni says (and I'm sure he's right), Avast 4.8  would probably work if it could be found. Unfortunately once at the site( from what I can see) they only offer a newer version that is not compatible with 98. The only AV that I could find to work(and it's mentioned in this thread) is Solo, and it's not free. I hope someone can correct me (free AV for Win98), but until then I'll keep looking. overthehill

Thanks once again, C_C.  Possibly I could have done a little better (I did try a few versions that weren't compatible) so I ended up going to the bottom of the heap. v 6.31.00.03.  At least this one is running and it's free. I don't plan on using this "Old Dell" on line once I get a few things straightened anyway, so hopefully this will be sufficient.
Thks. again. overthehill
