Title: SVChost is killing my laptop.
Post by: alexiaM on November 22, 2011, 05:23:37 AM
Hi there, need help. SVChost.exe (netsvc) and SVChost.exe (network service) are bringing my CPU to a stand still at 100% cpu usage. SVChost (network service) will slow down eventually but the other one keeps my CPU at an unusable level of at least 50%+. There must be some solution.

Things ive tried:

Virus and malware scanning.
Turning off automatic updates.
Uninstalling my AVG antivirus - This worked until the next time i started my computer, back to high CPU.
Used process explorer and stop/started all services running under each SVChost. Ive even stop/started every service that was running on the computer. no change.

These are the services running under each SVChost if it helps :

SVChost (netsvc)

Application information.
Background intelligent transfer service.
computer browser.
extensible authentication protocol,
group policy client.
IKE and AUTHIP and IPsec keying modules.
Internet connection sharing.
Ip helper.
Remote access connection sharer.
Shell hardware detection.
System event notification service.
Themes.
User profile service.
Windows management instrumentation.
Windows update.

SVchost (network service.)

Cryptographic service.
DNS client.
Network location awareness.
Telephony
Workstantion (lanman workstation.)

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) How does the system run in safe mode?

3) DO NOT run your system without an active anti virus app

Hi, thanks for your reply.

1- Its probably been about 2-3 months since i know that everyhing was working correctly, so i cant be 100% sure. There has been no new HW, i have deleted the software i D/L and had installed. No new browser updates. No virus/malware alerts or infections found during scanning. No errors. Theres probably been a few windows updates but because of the length of time that has past,  i cant restore back to that point.

2 - I just started it in safe mode and it was normal. CPU under 5%. Does this mean its not a driver or hardware problem?

3 - Yes, i know. I will be installing new software ASAP. This is the thing i cant understand. I unitnstalled AVG yesterday and the system went back to normal straight away. However, it reverted back to the high CPU when i started it today.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

After a few hours of going through all the services, i found two problems.

'Network store interface service' is the service causing SVChost to run the cpu at 100%. I cant disable this because i wont be able to connect to the internet.

Ive also got a problem with WMIPRVSE.EXE 'Windows management instrumentation' running between 30-50%. I need this service as well?

Not sure what to do next.

I suggest we make sure malware isn't the cause before we look elsewhere. Please follow the instructions in the following link and post your logs in the thread you create (NOT in this thread):

Its not malware. I have scanned multiple times with those applications mentioned in that thread and found nothing but a few tracking cookies.

I know you said that, but there's no harm in having our folks check. It's up to you. Otherwise, the only other two options I can think of are:

1) Boot to the OS disc and run the startup repair options. I doubt that will help. If it doesn't, you may be relegated to
2) A format and reinstall.

By the way, in one of your posts above you said you deleted the software you had previously downloaded and installed. What software was that?
