Title: I can't access my files after system recovery.
Post by: Improv on January 20, 2006, 05:35:40 PM
Hello, recently, a file on my computer named "hay.dll" was corrupted so
I couldn't even log onto my account. I did a system recovery and now
everything works and all my files were saved. The problem is, I had a
password on my old account and that account isn't on the log in screen
anymore. There's just the default account called "compaq_owner". I tried
going to documents and settings and I found my old account in that
folder, but I can't go inside it. I get a pop up window saying "folder is
not accessible" because it's password protected I'm guessing.

So I tried doing everything I could think of to open up that folder
(checking out the properties, going into safe mode, etc.) but I still
can't find a way. I know my password of course, I just can't find a way to
enter it so I can access the folder.

Do you know a way for me to retrieve my old files? Thanks.

Does your old login name, the one which you cannot enter appear on the login screen?

Nope, there's only the default "compaq_owner" account on the login screen now. My old account appears in the documents and settings folder though, but like I said, it's not accessible. Man... If only I could find a way to throw my old account back onto the login screen so I can enter the password there and access it. I already tried making a new user account using the exact same name as the old "locked" account, but it just made a regular new account. What was weird though was after I made the new account with the same name, I looked at the login screen and it even automatically put the same icon I had on my old account  :o

Blah, it's all confusing. Maybe I can do something with the properties? The one circled in red is the properties I get when I'm in safe mode.

Have you tried undoing the restoration?

How do I undo the restoration and what does that exactally do? Will everything be the way it was again before that .dll file corrupted? Thanks.

You need to take ownership (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech) of the folder(s)/file(s).

Don't forget about safe mode if you use XP Home.
