Title: My computer takes way too long to load!
Post by: bravofan71 on July 11, 2009, 10:34:04 AM
I have Windows XP Home Edition.

When I turn on my computer,my hard drive seems to keep running. Meaning that the light stays lit. I click on my account name and it take way too long to get to the desktop screen. It takes a while for everything to fully load. (I don't have a lot of things in my start up menu).

When I'm switching from video to video on You Tube,it's a nightmare! Don't get me started with Facebook or Myspace! :-\.(Downloading pictures is slow.) It locks up so bad that I have to turn it off from the surge protector and try to start it again! It even takes too long to log off and shut down my computer also.

I tried to do a system recovery but it said that didn't have a recovery partition! Could that be I've done a recovery about 2 months ago? It wouldn't let me do a system restore either!

These problems started over a week or so ago. I was thinking that it was just the internet being slow, but my computer light constantly runs and computer is slow even when I'm not online!

I appreciate any help. Thanks..

Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download)
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

Your main issue is 224MB of RAM.
XP runs well with at least 512MB of RAM (1GB preferable).
You need to buy more RAM.

As for time being, I suggest, you switch from AVG to something lighter...

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Antivirus: http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/
- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus, or Comodo firewall..
If you decide to install Comodo Internet Security, or just Comodo firewall, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

I also propose, you uninstall Ad-aware, which brings more load to your system.

I recommend, you unistall Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is a resource hog, and install FoxIt Reader: http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/, which is much smaller, and faster. It does very same thing.

You also have few unnecessary startups.

Open HJT, and checkmark:
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPBootOp] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Boot Optimizer\HPBootOp.exe" /run
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Advanced SystemCare 3] "C:\Program Files\IObit\Advanced SystemCare 3\AWC.exe" /startup

Click "Fix checked" button.
Restart computer.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC) (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/downloads.html&req=download&code=confirm_download&id=187)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Run defrag.

I will get back with you as soon as I get through. Thanks so much for you help! I'll let you know how it turns out.

A couple more questions...

Would RAM affect the speed of when I click on my administrator name to when it finally loads to my desktop? Which has been pretty slow lately.

And would it affect they way that I attempt to type, but it freezes during typing?

Definitely.

Partially possible. Some background program may be slowing the computer.

Ok,thanks. I'm going to download the Comodo AV/Firewall Combo,Foxit Reader and TFC. Is that something like CCleaner?

Yes. It's just easier to use.

In your case (low RAM), I'd rather stay with Windows firewall, and go for Avast, or Avira as antivirus program.

I use both on different Windows installation, and both work fine.

My computer is still slow, but it's a little better. Would taking off over 700MB of music make a huge difference?

Add some RAM.....it's the cheapest it's been in a long time...

My step-son wants an external harddrive. He wants to get a 1 terabyte though. Would this solve the problem or will we have to just get more RAM. Allof this is confusing to me.

Max your ram and you will think you have a new computer.  Go to crucial.com, use their free scanner and then buy what ever they reccomend. You might save a little by buying the ram somewhere else but their prices aren,t bad.  LOL from wannabe
