    Live mail and att.net setup
    « on: April 20, 2010, 09:44:05 PM »
I shot my pc and bought a HP laptop with windows 7 Home Premium.  I use At&t.net for my e-mail.  Up till now I always used Outlook Express with no problems. I am having no luck with Live Mail accepting my att. (Yahoo) setup with incoming or outgoing mail.

As usual and help will be appreciated

Just kidding about shooting my pc. Using it now to send this.

Are the POP3 and SMTP settings correct ? ?
I may be wrong but i don't think LiveMail will work on Yahoo accounts without tweaking...

Yes, I have checked and rechecked.  I think you are right about the tweaking.  I checked the port nos. and they are set at the recommended numbers.  I went to the att.net website and they still use the numbers for pop3 etc.

Yes, they are the settings that att still recommends.

I suggest you export your email account from Outlook Express, since your email account works in OE.  It will be saved as a file with the extension, .iaf.  Copy that file to a flash drive and then import it into Windows Live Mail

ATT, Yahoo, SBC, DSL email settings

             1. Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
             2. Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
             3. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.
             4. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.

Actually, that reference was not a good one since it has several conflicting comments on the correct settings.  So, what do you mean by "Yes, they are the settings that att still recommends."?

Creating an email in WLM can be very easy, at least with some ISP's.  As http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/windowsLiveMail/setupEmailAccounts/ says, "Windows Live Mail only requires three fields of information to try to automatically setup an email account for you:".  The three fields are email address, password, and Display Name.  By just entering those three elements in the new email account setup wizard, WLM will attempt to collect and test your email account information.

I created an account in WLM this way.  It couldn't be easier.

I don't know what I did but I got it to work.  I went back and started from scratch using the settings that at&t had on their support pages.  I must of had a  mistake in something I put a check mark in or left one out where there should have been one.  I also did it when I wasn't tired.

I am going to copy and paste what you suggested on this post just so I will have a record of  what to do the next time.

As always, thank you for your help.  Your suggestions made me think. Getting old ain't for wimps.
