Crackling noise from video card after poweroff
« on: December 13, 2010, 08:04:56 AM »
I recently got 3 new nvidia geforce gt 240 graphics cards. I installed each of them in a different comp. Now, aproximetly 3 minutes after I turn off each of these comps, there is a crackling noise that comes directly from the video card and lasts for about 15 seconds. It sounds like some food frying in a pan. I am just wondering if this is common. I have not seen any issues with the cards functionality.

Return the cards under Warranty...this is not normal behaviour.
Of course it could be the MBoard as well...but unlikely if you've installed them into different rigs...

PS. Let me guess...these came from eBay ? ?

No. These came directly from newegg.com.

No, it's not the motherboards because I had the comps running for a while without the graphics cards and there was no noise.

I think I am going to wait until I see some problems because they perform very well and don't make that noise when they are running. It seems unlikely that all three would be bad.

Does any one have a geforce gt 240? Have you ever heard this noise? It's about three minutes after you power off the system.

Something just occured to me. Wouldn't that be the time when the capacitors are discharging? Do caps ever make noise when they discharge?

1.  Does any one have a geforce gt 240? Have you ever heard this noise? It's about three minutes after you power off the system.
2.  Wouldn't that be the time when the capacitors are discharging?
3.  Do caps ever make noise when they discharge?
1.  GeForce 240 is the graphics processor, not the maker of the card.
2.  I suppose it's possible.
3.  Only if they are high voltage or high capacity, which don't exist on a graphics card.  PSU maybe?
