Can't access gateway.2wire.net, but internet works.
    « on: April 18, 2012, 04:34:47 PM »
    Hello.
I have a Windows XP Desktop computer. I also have a Gateway 2wire 2701HG-B internet router, that works fine. I cannot access the control panel for my router at gateway.2wire.net on Firefox or Internet Explorer 8.  I have tried using my routers IP, gained by typing ipconfig in the cmd window:

    C:\Documents and Settings\(Insert My Profile Name)>ipconfig

    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

            Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : gateway.2wire.net
            IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.75
            Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
            Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

I have tried pinging www.Google.com, and it worked. I have tried power cycling my router.
    Please help.

None of the above are the control panel address for the two-wire.
Did you setup this modem in the beginning? Did you not write down the information you need?  Do you have the documentation?
Please supply the model number and somebody can help you find the documentation that explains how to get to the router.

BTW: when you want to get into the router, you should do this:
A Unplug the router from the phone line.
B Plug only one computer into the router.
    C Restart the computer.
D Restart the Rutter by unplugging it for 20 seconds, then plug in back into the wall outlet.

These steps are not always needed, but when things don't work that is what they tell you to do if you call tech support.

I think the control panel for a two-wire is:
    192.168.1.1
You also need the username and password.

The documentation needed to confirm this. If you had changed it, you should have left a note in the manual.

I forgot to mention, when the router was set up, I could access the control panel easily by typing the router IP address into my browser, which is as in the above, 192.168.1.254. I did supply the model number, it's a AT&T Gateway 2wire 2701HG-B. Also I have the manual, and all it says is for me to type in http://gateway.2wire.net to an internet browser, and it would take me to the control panel. I have already unplugged and replugged the router, as I said, and I did restart the computer.

      OK.
Here is how I just now did a log in to a me 2-Wire out of the box.
I turned off the wireless on my laptop
I plug Ethernet cable into laptop and enabled Ethernet.
      Turn on  the2 Wire.
I open Internet Explore and let it try my home page.
Error messages shows the router given error page. (My Ererhnet NIC is set for auto DNS.)

The new 2-wire router showed the save gateway address you gave when I go go to router home page.
This one is a 2701HG-B and came from AT&T a few weeks ago.

Computer_Commando is right. The 2-wire is at:
      http://192.168.1.254/

I already tried that. It is the gateway IP address:     Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254  It does not work. Also, I forgot to mention I get a 404 in Internet Explorer when trying to access gateway.2wire.net, or 192.168.1.254 . In Firefox, I just get a blank white page, not a "Server not Found" error. The picture looks like how the control panel should.

As a last resort, you can force a ;'hard reset' on the router. It is a little hole with a red edge. on  the back of the router. Stick a bent paper clip in  there for about 10 secs, I recall. This pits everything back to factory.

        Esit: a pencil works too.

        Default Gateway
        192.168.1.254
        172.16.0.1
        10.0.0.1

The 2-wire should respond to at least one of the above.

Nope. The last two my browser gave a "connection timeout" error to. The first one, as usual, gave a blank page with no errors, except on IE8, where it gave me a 404 error.

The manual says that it should revert to one of the factory IP for local network after you hold the reset button for several seconds with the power on.
But that also wipes out some other settings. So you have to get the password for the PPP from your ISP.

EDIT: If the problem persists, check the power brink and see if it is doing its job. Otherwise, the 2wire 2701HG-B may be at the end of its life.
