obnoxious issue with Windows Media player
« on: October 29, 2012, 06:19:30 PM »
I've been ripping songs from my personal CD collection to MP3 both yesterday and today. Everything seemed to be going smoothly but then I noticed that songs which I had changed the file's name mysteriously reverted to their original file names. This is thoroughly aggravating!! >:/  I re-name the files to the names and numerical number I wanted them to have then noticed later that they again reverted the original number and file name. UGH!! Why does this keep happening!?

I have Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows 7. I think the WMP is the version which came with the computer but I can't be sure. A "fix I read on the internet suggested removing check mark from "Rename music files using rip music settings" box under options menu but I found this box already WAS un-checked.

edit: it seems I have WMP version 12

WMP has never been as polished as it could be. You will have a better experience with third party tag editors.

My favorite (i have tried many): http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

If you want an all in one then check out www.mediamonkey.com

VLC is also a great option but ease of use is not always one of it's strong points IMO.

Exactly where are you attempting to change the name? In Windows Media Player or on the file itself in Windows?

If you're changing it in Windows Media Player, this will not change the file name and WMP will likely revert to the actual file name.

Evilfantasy's suggestion will help you get the tag set. I agree, WMP has terrible support for tag editing.

Sorry late reply - on the east coast and just got power back after Sandy - ugh.  I was changing files names of the mp3s in the Windows folders and they changed back - several times. It seems every time I change the file's name it will revert when I'm not looking.

Re-visit Quaxo's reply above...

In order to change the Meta data on the file and have it retained you'ld need a different media player...
MediaMonkey will do this...and there is a Free version.

I'm not changing any meta data - only trying to change the file's name to add the artist's name before the song title (in an album with several songs by different artists). This problem is irritating as I have dozens of CDs and took songs from each one and some only ripped as "track 01" etc. and now the artist's name/song titles I painstakingly typed in place of that have been changed back to "track 01" - on dozens of songs >:/

If WMP will not allow e to have my music the way I want I'd cheerfully dump such a useless program in place of a better one. I downloaded a few different "freeware" rippers but none were any good. I need one that will be simple and easy to use and allow me to rip CDs to 320 MP3s.

Why don't you just change the metadata in your media program? Changing the filenames won't change the Artist and Title as seen by media players...
If it's that big a deal use a program that lets you reorganize media files based on the tags, such as MediaMonkey.

I'm doing a huge project for a friend from the CDs and they are his. He had over a hundred CDs and I don't know this type of music so I would not know which song or artist any of them were if the file names were changed. He was with me at my house at the time I posted the original post and was instructing which songs he wanted from each disc and I numbered them in the order he wanted them in the folders so they'd be in that order when we burned them to CDs. I need them to have their correct artist and title like I'd typed them to print the tracklist for each disc. He doesn't have a computer and doesn't know how to use them so he has me do mixes for him sometimes but I'd never before done it in this manner. Usually we just have downloaded MP3s of songs that were ripped from vinyl records so this file re-naming was never any issue.

I wanted the file names to stay the way I put them so we'd know which songs were which. This project was taking a long time to be getting songs from many individual discs and by the time we realized this was happening we had several files then and didn't know which songs were which and kept having to listen to them and re-name the files only to find they'd reverted to original titles every time we went back to the folders. Meta data is irrelevant as I won't be listening to the music myself on any computer and my friend is an older man who does not own, nor know how to use, computer or MP3 players. He'll be playing the custom mixes on his on CD player and looking at printed paper tracklist while he listens, as he always does.

You chose to let MM be the default media player during install. Too few people actuall pay attention during install processes.

You can change the defaults back. See here

Are you trying to change the meta-data on the CD itself or on the saved files on the computer?
