Windows 8.1 Pc Slow and Laggy after Trojan Removal
    « on: January 13, 2015, 03:22:10 PM »
    Hey all

Before Christmas I noticed a strange issue with my PC, I was running a wireless mouse and keyboard and both would stop responding unless I was atleast half a meter away from it (was never an issue before) thinking both had just simultaneously run low on battery power I replaced the batteries.  To no avail I ran a few programs to find that I had a Trojan on my pc so I removed it only to find my pc running slow taking 15-20 seconds to load a right click on desktop etc. I decided wipe and reinstall my OS but im still having issues it still hangs on just about anything and its a high-end gaming laptop which makes it even worse.  I have since run a bunch of registry cleans and tried just about every anti-virus/malware/adware/spyware program suggested on other sites to the same issues as before.

Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
    *************************************************************************
If you wiped it and did a re-install there should not be any infections on the computer. You mentioned a PC and then later on you mentioned a laptop. Is this about two computers were dealing with?

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications and their potential for harming your OS far outweighs any small potential for improving your computer's performance.

There are a number of them available and some are more safe than others. Keep in mind that no two registry cleaners work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad" entry. One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause a problem when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work. Without research into what the registry entry selected for deletion is, a registry cleaner can end up being an automated method to cause problems with the registry.

For routine use by those not familiar with the registry, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

      Hello Dave,

Thanks for responding so quickly, I should have mentioned to be more concise atleast I am dealing with just a laptop (for some reason I typed PC) I did do a wipe but only on the OS drive (C:\) and being a pre-built laptop it came with the OS version of 8.1 so it does have recovery partitions etc I cant access but im not entirely sure if viruses can.  Or If im simply not doing the wipe and install correctly.  Also thankyou for the info on registry cleaners I was using one called ccleaner which does a number of things other than just registry.

      Thanks Dean.

Do you have the OS disk? Without it, you cannot do a reformat and re-install. If you only have the Recovery Partition, you can only take your computer back to the day it was purchased. Don't forget to save your important data. BTW, Ccleaner is safe to use.

I don't I only have the OEM version of windows 8.1;  And that is entirely what I expected, while my laptop worked perfectly fine on day one even after using and restoring back to the recovery partition It's certainly not like it was.  Ultimately the only fix is going to be purchasing a copy of Windows and doing a full wipe of all partitions and reinstall?

        Thanks Dean

Here's how to run the Recovery Console in Windows 8.1. Did you do it this way?

Yes, I did I first tried refresh (this came back with a failure), So than I did the reinstall option which seemed to work up until I used it and was reinstalling drivers etc and realised nothing had really improved with it.  This leads me to believe there is something wrong with the recovery partition which would also require a format ( I only formatted the main partition, because I knew I had an OEM version of windows and didn't want to remove anything I needed).  Ultimately by the sounds of it I need to buy a physical copy of windows and format all partitions (which if I have to I will the laptop was rather expensive).

You should contact the retailer where you got the computer as well as MS.

I will shoot them an email, I know the MS website has form where they scan your computer specs so I will attempt that before going any further. Thanks for all your help.
