Keep getting pop-ups about installing a Windows Vista Driver
    « on: October 05, 2015, 02:32:25 PM »
I have been having some weird things going on with my computer, and have posted here and gotten help.  But I am frequently getting a pop-up that tells me I need to download Windows Vista Driver Optimizer.  It says it is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. Tells me it will help a lot of things, one of them crashes and I was told that my hard drive might be getting ready to crash, faster windows performance, increased computer stability and performance, etc.  Should I download this and see if it helps any of my problems?  I have an older computer, running Vista, AMD Athlon 64 Pro 3500+, 2.21 GHz, 2:00 GB,
32-bit operating system. My computer has gotten slower.  I have Microsoft Essentials anti-virus and ad-aware malware.  Also, I have been trying to do backups to an external hard drive (Seagate) and it tells me my backups fail.  Any insight is much appreciated as I know squat about computers, other than email and surf the web.  I don't understand a lot of the techie stuff. I have run virus scan and malware, shows up clean.

    You have a malware infection.

Please follow the instructions in the following link and post your logs in the thread you create (NOT in this thread):

Thanks Allan, I will do that shortly.  But one thing, and I told you I wasn't techie, what do you mean you said post it but not in this thread?  And then when I went to the directions, it says not to bump your thread.  What does that mean? Not post it here? I told you I was computer stupid, but obviously I am stupid.  Thanks again for your help.

Allan, I think I understand now after reading through more of the instructions. I have Slim Cleaner Plus on my computer, should I use that, uninstall it and do CClean Slim, or are they the same thing?

Just follow all of the instructions in the link I posted. I'll make life easier for you and move this thread to the malware forum - you can post the results of the scans in this thread. If the instructions say to use ccleaner, please use ccleaner. Don't worry about uninstalling anything right now.

From this point forward any questions you have will be answered only by our malware specialist.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

              1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
              2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
              3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
              4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
              5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
              6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
              7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
              *************************************************************************
              You should uninstall IE 8.

Please run the MBAM scan and post the log.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

•Warning! Once the scan is complete JRT will shut down your browser with NO warning.

•Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.

•Temporarily disable your Antivirus and any Antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

•Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click JRT and select Run as Administrator

•The tool will open and start scanning your system.

•Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

•On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

•Copy and Paste the JRT.txt log into your next message.

If I uninstall IE8, then how do I use the web to download the Junkware Removal Tool?  Also, how do I give you the MBAM log? I ran it, thought I posted it, but evidently not.  I followed the instructions of where to find it on my computer, and every time a window came up telling me not found, try a different path, or something like that.  I tried two ways to pull up the MBAM log, not able to do it.  Oh, and by the way, SuperDave, you have helped me many times in the past.  You've gotten me back together and I think SuperDave is a great name for you!  Also, I can access the internet, no problem.

You currently have IE 8 and IE 9 on your computer. There is no need to keep IE8 because it is replaced by IE9
You can run MBAM again and see if you can find the log or you can do a search for *.txt. Make sure you use the wildcard star dot.

Dave, Please don't give up on me yet! I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet as I've been sick.  I'm in remission from pancreatic cancer and the surgery I had leaves your body unpredictable.  I am feeling a little better and will try to work on this tomorrow.  But first of all, where do I go to find IE 8 to uninstall it?  What's wildcard star dot.?  (Again, I told you I know nothing about the workings of a computer!)  Thanks - hopefully I'll be back with you shortly.
