I have a mac pro 3.1 8 core with a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Graphics card.  After time the card shuts down my computer.  I took the side cabinet off and put a small personal fan by the card. I believe the built in fan is not doing the job. Can the fan be the problem ? could the components have been compromised and replacing the fan will not solve the problem.

Does the system no longer shut down with fan added? If so then it was an overheat condition.

It is possible for a GPU fan to fail and run slower or not at all and cause an overheat. Hopefully the overheat condition didnt do permanent damage to GPU. You would know you have permanent damage if portions of the display show artifacts, lines, voids, or no image etc.
