Drivers are updated but have lost the Volumn icon in taskbar. When I tick the box to place it in taskbar I get error message that Windows cannot run because Volumn Control program is not installed.  Add Remove shows it is. There is no repair for it. When I choose change/remove it wants to remove it. Any suggestions?

Go to the link I posted in reply #25 and try Diagnostics.

Where are you getting these newer drivers from?
The Dell support page for your Dimension 4700 lists drivers
              http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/dimension-4700/drivers
the audio is from 2005, chipset 2004, modem 2004, 2005 and 2006 depending on the hardware inside your tower, video 2005 and 2006 again depends on the hardware.
I would not recommend downloading drivers from any 3rd party sites.
The newer drivers that you think you need might be to add function for Vista, 7 and 8 but won't do a thing for XP.

As I mentioned previously, I rarely update drivers. We have a Dimension 2400 (also from 2004, same as the Dimension 4700) running XP and an Optiplex 745 (2006) purchased refurbed and upgraded to Win 7. I haven't touched the drivers in either computer.

Phones use 3.5mm audio connections, not USB,  the same as a computer's audio port.

All drivers came from your direction/Dell. I just ran another scan and Dell recommended BIOS which I already installed previously and now DVD set of drivers. I ran these and it said they were already installed (I reinstalled them) except for the patch of which it said I needed DVD DX5.1 to install the patch.
I am still working on the parser error when trying to install MS Fix It. it is error 0x80070003. This is to get SNDVOL32, the V Control icon in task bar and the correction to load the troubleshooting items for MS Fix IT.. I found it in C:\I386 but don't know where to move it  to make the correction. I noted this  info  "C:\I386\config.machine.config. Paser returned error 0x80070003". Installing the drivers did not change this.

Also I ran DirectX9.0c and there is a "d3d9d.dll v. 9.18.0944.0000 Final Debug dated 6/2/2010.  Could this cause an audio problem? It is yellow flagged.

Hi all who have helped me with all my Winxp problems with sound. All drivers are updated and I uninstalled the Chrome Browser that no longer supports XP with one I had not heard of, Slimjet. It is great. Veryfast and fair sound after all I have done, removed and replaced. The colors and clarity are just wonderful on this old machine. I still am unable to fix the volumn icon on taskbar but maybe someday it will just appear. I just need to find out where to move the SNDVOL32.exe file. I found it but it is mot in correct location. Someday haha.
I appreciate everyones help and once again Thank you all!!!

Go to All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, right click on Volume Control and create a shortcut.

Thanks Super Dave. I think that the problem is that it is not in Entertainment. It is alone at bottom of Assistant as well as being alone in Add/Remove and I do have it on my desktop as SNDVOL32.exe. I just don't know where I should send it too other than desktop. I do have sound but no icon as you know that.
I ran a Reimage Scan (MS Fix It) and it shows that the CPU is running only 2.79 rather than 4. (MS Fix It installed when I installed the Avaria Anti Virus program). I found that surprizing.

In Add/Remove I have Windows Media 11 and Windows Media 11 runtime. Are they the same ?  Seems to me that I don't need both, also is Realtec manager a media program and do I need it? Is Real Player or Window Media Player  better than the other?

I have that also. If it's not bothering your computer, leave it be.

OK, I now have 2 shortcuts of V Control on desktop. What do I do with one now?  Should I remove V Control from Add/Remove then reboot to see what happens.?
