If an email address has been shut down, does it still receive emails sent to that address?  If not where do they go and are they retrievable?

What kind of email address? Webmail such as Hotmail, Gmail, etc? Or one provided by an ISP?

If they have properly removed the account, chances are they won't be storing emails for it as this costs money.  Instead they will "bounce" any incoming emails so the sender gets a reply saying that the email address they are trying to send it to does not exist.
